Service Road Under Renovation on Attila Square

Major road renovation works have begun on the service road at Attila Square in Debrecen. The investment was presented at a press conference at the site by József Hetei, city councillor for the district, on 9 September 2026.

As the councillor explained, road renovation works are continuing in Debrecen in 2026, with the reconstruction of the Attila Square service road as the latest stage of this programme. Although classified as a service road, it is in fact a very important connecting road between Hajnal Street and Baross Street and therefore carries a considerable volume of traffic. Unfortunately, this was already evident from its condition, making its renovation fully justified. According to József Hetei, the renewal of the service road will be a major help for those travelling from Hajnal Street towards, for example, Nap Street or Szent Anna Street, meaning that the significance of the investment extends beyond the road itself.

On the 120-metre section between Hajnal Street and Baross Street, the works will initially involve replacing the kerbstones and bringing the existing utility fittings to the correct level, followed by the laying of a new asphalt layer. The investment has a gross cost of HUF 33 million, which the Municipality is financing from its own funds. In addition to improving the quality of the road surface, traffic safety will also be enhanced by a traffic-calming island to be installed in front of No. 6 Attila Square. The works began on 7 September and, depending on weather conditions, are expected to be completed on 28 September.

Traffic restrictions will be in force during this period: the service road will be closed to through traffic, and, depending on the works currently under way, only residents will be permitted to enter. József Hetei therefore asked those travelling through the area not to rely on their usual routes, but to follow the temporary road signs in place. He also asked residents and those travelling through the area for their patience while the investment is being carried out.
