Sixth-generation electric engines arrive at the BMW Group Plant Debrecen

“Our Steyr plant has been supplying the first sixth-generation electric motors to the development centre in Munich since September, and we have recently started to deliver our e-motors directly to the BMW Group Plant Debrecen, where they are installed in test vehicles,” Vice President Engine Production at BMW AG and Managing Director of the Austrian plant, Klaus von Moltke, said.

The first Neue Klasse test cars recently rolled off the production line at BMW Group Plant Debrecen, marking the start of the final preparatory phase for series production, which is due to start at the end of 2025. As the vehicles approach production readiness, all logistics and production processes at the plant are being tested under real-life conditions and continuously optimised to ensure a smooth start to series production.

BMW has recently announced a new development that will see newly produced cars drive in self-driving mode without a driver on the factory floor for their first kilometre.

The so-called Automated Driving In-Plant technology has been tested at their largest European plant in Dingolfing since 2022, and it has now been put into live operation.

“Automated driving within the plant optimises our production process and provides significant efficiency gains in our logistics,” a Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production, Milan Nedeljković, said.

According to a BMW Group statement, the technology is being rolled out continuously in the company’s plants. It will be used in Debrecen at the same time as the start of series production.
