Speedway European Championship Qualification in Debrecen

The tradition continues: similar to recent years, one of the qualifications for the Individual Speedway European Championship (SEC) series will take place in Debrecen on Thursday, May 1, starting at 3:00 PM.

Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa and Norbert Baráth, CEO of Speedwolf Sportszervező Nonprofit Kft., shared the details at the Perényi Pál Stadium.

According to the official announcement, 16 riders from 13 nations will compete for advancement. Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany will each be represented by two competitors, while Denmark, Sweden, Latvia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Slovenia, and Norway will each have one representative. Hungary will have one primary competitor and two reserve riders. Several top speedway nations will be represented in Debrecen, as well as emerging talents from newer countries, all taking to the track at the Perényi Pál Stadium.

Norbert Baráth, CEO of Speedwolf Sportszervező Nonprofit Kft., stated that Norbert Magosi will represent Hungary in the event against foreign rivals, with two young talents from Debrecen, Richárd Füzesi and Zoltán Lovas, ready to step in as reserves on May 1. The stakes of the competition are high, as the top four riders from the qualifiers will advance to the SEC Challenge. Alongside Hungary, Austria, Germany, and France will also host qualifiers.

The lineup includes international stars such as Danish rider Michael Jepsen Jensen, who has already trained in Debrecen this year and is in excellent form, ranking among the top five point scorers in the Polish PGE Ekstraliga—the world’s strongest championship. Swedish rider Jacob Thorsell, who has previously stood on the podium in Debrecen, will also compete, along with Polish talents Mateusz Cierniak and Bartłomiej Kowalski, both strong contenders for advancement.

Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa emphasised that Debrecen’s city leadership prioritises fostering education, culture, and sports, alongside economic growth. The Perényi Pál Speedway Stadium is the last bastion of this motorsport in Hungary, as it is the only venue with the necessary licenses to host international competitions. He believes it is vital to preserve this technical sport in Debrecen, as it is highly popular. The packed stands at each event are a testament to this, and it is hoped that May 1 will be no exception. The city of Debrecen consistently supports motorsport, allocating HUF 15 million to this cause this year, the deputy mayor stated.

The official program for the qualifier will begin at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 1, with practice sessions. Rider introductions will take place at 2:45 PM, followed by the first heat at 3:00 PM.
