Summer Closure Dates for Kindergartens and Nurseries in Debrecen

The city assembly’s Committee on Culture and Education has made a decision regarding the closure of kindergartens during holidays in 2026. The changing needs of parents are clearly indicated by the fact that, compared to 2019, the number of those who expressed a need for on-duty care in advance has increased by more than 50 percent.

This year, kindergartens will be closed not for six but only five weeks, from July 13 to August 14.

During the summer closure, on-duty services will be provided by the following institutions:
Ifjúság Street Kindergarten (4027 Debrecen, Ifjúság Street 4)
Homokkert Pitypang Kindergarten (4030 Debrecen, Szabó Kálmán Street 39)
Mesekert Kindergarten (4033 Debrecen, Körtefa Street 3)
Nagyerdő Kindergarten (4032 Debrecen, Pallagi Road 3)
Százszorszép Kindergarten (4031 Debrecen, Széchenyi Street 65)

During the nationwide winter holiday, kindergartens in Debrecen will also be closed; on-duty care will then be provided by the Thaly Kálmán Street Kindergarten (at its temporary service location: 4032 Debrecen, Jerikó Street 17).

Last year, parents requested on-duty care for nearly one thousand kindergarten children during the summer holiday. There was a week when nearly five hundred children were cared for, but there was also a week when only 251 children were enrolled.

In the case of nurseries, the decision had already been made earlier by the city assembly’s Social Committee. According to this, the nurseries belonging to the United Nursery Institution of the City of Debrecen will be closed for four weeks, from July 13 to August 8.

Under the regulations, the summer closure could last up to five weeks, but in Debrecen the nurseries usually observe a shorter, four-week break.

During the closure period, on-duty services will be provided by the Ősz Street Branch Institution and the Faraktár Street Branch Institution.

Last year, there was one on-duty nursery; parents from 11 branch institutions indicated a need for on-duty care for 102 young children. The service was used by 84 children in July and 72 in August, with the actual daily number of children ranging between 46 and 66.

During the holiday period, maintenance and renovation work as well as thorough cleaning will be carried out in both nurseries and kindergartens.
