Tap Water Safe to Drink in Debrecen

The Municipality of Debrecen requests that no one confuse samples taken from private wells with drinking water samples collected from the monitored, closed public water supply system, as water found in private wells is not tap water.

As previously stated by the municipality, Debrecen’s tap water is safe to consume. Today, further information appeared on social media regarding the contamination discovered at the Debrecen plant of SEMCORP, according to which the Association of Mikepércs Mothers for the Environment (MIAKÖ), in cooperation with Greenpeace Hungary, measured manganese concentrations several times above the permitted limit in the water of three privately owned wells used by residents.

Debrecen’s drinking water supply is provided by three water production sites located at a considerable distance from the factories. The water is extracted from wells 160 to 230 metres deep, drawing on water reserves protected by several impermeable geological layers. The water sources and production wells are surrounded by continuously monitored observation wells, which enable any changes in water quality to be detected in a timely manner.

A further important safety factor is that groundwater in the Debrecen area flows from north-east to south-west, that is, from the direction of the city’s water sources towards the industrial areas, and not the other way round. In addition, groundwater movement is extremely slow, amounting to only 550–900 metres per year.

According to tests carried out by Debreceni Vízmű Zrt., the water quality of the observation wells and production wells associated with the water sources is satisfactory. The extracted water also undergoes a regulated and continuously monitored treatment process before reaching consumers. As a result, it is officially classified as drinking water, that is, a food product.

The contamination identified at SEMCORP, together with its elimination and the remediation of the affected site, is the responsibility of the polluter. The Municipality of Debrecen continues to expect a full investigation by the competent authorities and the immediate implementation of all necessary measures.

The Municipality asks everyone to share only verified and reliable information and not to create unnecessary panic on social media. This is particularly important during the current warm period, when adequate hydration is of paramount importance.
