Targeted Grass-Cutting Begins at Debrecen’s Most Frequented Community Spaces
In May, Debrecen temporarily suspended the mowing of public grass areas without automatic irrigation systems due to the dry weather conditions, in order to protect the grass and improve the city’s microclimate, in line with the “No Mow May” initiative. At the same time, the municipality is carrying out targeted mowing works at playgrounds, outdoor fitness parks, dog parks and venues hosting weekend events.
Alongside the suspension of mowing, specialists from the Green Areas Department and contracted park maintenance professionals have continuously monitored, and continue to monitor, the condition and growth of grass vegetation throughout the city. Based on the results of this grass monitoring programme, and taking into account the particularly intense public use of playgrounds, fitness parks and dog parks, the consideration of potential health risks related to tick prevention, and the need to maintain orderly conditions at key outdoor activity locations, the municipality decided to order targeted mowing works at the end of last week. These works are currently ongoing across the city.
Several events will take place over the weekend, and numerous outdoor programmes are being organised for Children’s Day. In preparation for these community events, the municipality is also ensuring the maintenance of grass vegetation at the relevant venues. The Green Areas Department is carrying out mowing works in Újkert, around the Lehel Street hill area, in Nagymacs, at Liget Square, along Klastrompart Row in Józsa, and on Pásti Street.
