Temporary Traffic Arrangements to Be Introduced at Several Locations Across Debrecen Due to Comprehensive Water Main Upgrade
In close cooperation with Debrecen Waterworks, the municipality is launching a comprehensive, phased infrastructure development programme. The condition of the public drinking water trunk mains running beneath Main Road No. 33 has significantly deteriorated due to their age, with some sections now more than 70 years old. Both the quality of the pipe material and the condition of the fittings and connections are critical and pose a high operational risk.
The continuously increasing traffic load on the affected road sections further increases the risk of failures in the public drinking water trunk mains, jeopardises operational security, and has made their reliable operation increasingly critical.
To prevent more serious failures and potential burst water mains in the future, which could also cause the road surface to subside or collapse, Debrecen Waterworks will renovate the most critical sections of the network according to a priority schedule before the road construction works begin.
The reconstruction programme will affect the following five key junctions:
Füredi Road – Miklós Sinay Street junction: Renewal of the pipeline supplying the network and construction of new junction connections. Works will commence on 13 July and are expected to be completed by 30 August.
Balmazújvárosi Road 11 (Decathlon store) area: Reconstruction of the pipeline beneath the carriageway, including the construction of new junction connections. To protect the newly constructed road surface, the intervention will take place outside the carriageway, within the verge, involving limited removal of green space. Works will commence on 13 July and are expected to be completed by 15 August.
Balmazújvárosi Road – Köntösgát Row junction: Refurbishment of the trunk main beneath the carriageway, including the installation of gate valves. Works will commence on 15 August and are expected to be completed by 30 October.
Balmazújvárosi Road 10 (Water Production Plant I, MÖMAX store) area: Modernisation of the existing trunk mains on the critical sections and reconnection of the associated pipelines.
Water main junction 4.1
Refurbishment works on this section will take place between 15 July and 30 August.
Water main junction 4.2
Refurbishment works on this section will take place between 30 July and 30 September.
Section between Balmazújvárosi Road, the prefabricated housing estate slip road and Hegedű Street: Refurbishment of the pipelines beneath the carriageway, including the installation of new junction connections and gate valves. Works will commence on 30 July and are expected to be completed by 30 August.
The works require specialist expertise, and engineers will employ the so-called Process-Phoenix method. This modern resin-impregnated liner technology involves inserting a new lining inside the existing ageing pipelines. Although this modern method is technically one of the most effective available, very little is visible from the surface. In practice, only two excavation pits will be visible on either side of the road within the work area: a so-called launch pit and a reception pit. The actual operations, including installing, curing and hardening the liner, take place underground. The process does not require a large on-site workforce; however, the technology itself is highly time-consuming. As a result, road users may often see only a fenced-off excavation pit, while the majority of the work is being carried out below ground, meaning that engineers may not necessarily be visible on site.
One of the greatest advantages of the so-called “no-dig” reconstruction method is that it eliminates the need to excavate the full width of the road or long sections of the carriageway. The works require only two excavation pits and sufficient working space for the specialist equipment to operate safely. Consequently, the intervention affects a much smaller area and results in significantly less disruption for road users.
The reconstruction of this ageing and critical section of the network is essential to maintain the security of the water supply. At the same time, Debrecen Waterworks is committed to carrying out the works with as little excavation and disruption to traffic as possible.
Motorists and other road users travelling through the areas affected by the project are asked to approach the work sites with extra care, follow the temporary traffic arrangements in place, and observe all posted traffic guidance and signage.
