The 110th anniversary of the service of health visitors was celebrated in Debrecen
The Debrecen Institute of Primary Care and Health Development at the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen organised a celebration to mark the 110th anniversary of the establishment of the Health Visitor Service, as well as the 10th anniversary of its designation as a Hungarikum.
The event honoured the unique role of Hungary’s health visitor network and its irreplaceable importance in the lives of families and children.
In her welcome speech, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasised that the Hungarian health visitor network is a globally unique Hungarikum, providing fundamental care for families from the birth of a child. This profession is not just a job but a heartfelt service that embodies the eternal values of human connection, personal attention, and care. The deputy mayor highlighted Debrecen’s “Caring City Program,” which prioritises family and child care. She noted that health visitors play a significant role in this, while the advance of the digital world presents new challenges for them. She expressed her gratitude for their dedicated work, which helps improve the lives of families in Debrecen. She stressed that health visitors are the primary source of support for future parents, guiding them through the challenges of raising children.
In his speech, Csaba Papp, Director of the Institute, paid tribute to the 110-year history of the health visitor service, highlighting its deep roots and historical significance. “Throughout its 110-year history, the health visitor service has always stood by families, offering comfort, hope, and assistance even during the most difficult times. This profession is a steady point that prepares mothers for childbirth and the joys of parenting, easing the fears of new parents,” he stated. The director emphasised the success of the integration with the University of Debrecen, which created a unified, high-quality system. “We are deeply grateful for their work and perseverance, with which they stand strong every day,” he added.
Experts also discussed the training of health visitors, the societal role of the profession, its prospects, and the challenges it faces. It was noted that the path of a health visitor is challenging and carries significant responsibility. Yet, it remains attractive to many because it conveys value, security, and a sense of vocation. Leaders of university and health visitor organisations participating in the event stressed that the health visitor service has always stood by families, even through the storms of history. Health Visitors’ Day was not only a tribute to the past but also a celebration of hope for the future and the unity of the professional community.
