Széles Diána said that in the coming years, building on the results of economic development, their primary objective is to increase the well-being of the people of Debrecen.
In three years, more than five thousand events have been organised as part of the Move, Debrecen! Movement, Diána Széles told Debrecen Television’s Evening Close-up programme. The deputy mayor of Debrecen added that when the city’s latest health plan was drawn up, it identified problems that needed to be addressed.
As she recalled, during the coronavirus epidemic, everyone felt alone, so one of the movement’s main objectives is to organise communities and hold community events.
She stressed that the most important thing is that sport and physical activity programmes are regular and free of charge, so that the opportunity is open to everyone and no one’s financial situation limits their ability to take action for their health.
Diána Széles spoke about the launch of the school programme a year later, which had been preceded by a huge amount of preparatory work.
“We now have 40 schools with physical activity programmes funded by the local government,” she said.
The Deputy Mayor stated, the much-touted “caring city” is not a slogan, but a “very serious, effective and coordinated cooperation”.
She believes that the city should follow the lives of the people of Debrecen from birth to death. As she said, “the city is not always the maintainer of an institution, but the local government supports all of them, for example, the university-run Debrecen Institute of Primary Care and Health Development is supported with 200 million forints a year”. She added that the social system alone operates in Debrecen with more than HUF 3.5 billion.
The deputy mayor, who is also responsible for tourism, said that the basis for all this is the development of accommodation.
“At the beginning of the last cycle there were sixteen hotels in the city, now there are twenty. This is a huge leap forward, a change of scale in tourism, and I am very proud that even the big international hotel chains are seeing the potential of Debrecen,” she said.
Among the achievements of the last cycle, she highlighted the completely rebuilt strand and the Sziget-kék themed playground.
According to Diána Széles, it was very important for Debrecen that Hungary’s attractions were organised into a tourist destination, and Debrecen made use of the opportunity, and established cooperation with other players in the destination, with the Visit Debrecen centre playing a prominent role.
She added that in previous years, the number of visitors to Debrecen decreased in the winter period, but this was changed by the development of the Advent Fair.
In the programme, the Debrecen Charity Board was mentioned, which, according to the deputy mayor, “serves all target groups”. According to Diána Széles, the needy have also understood that they cannot do without cooperation, because they do not want to increase poverty, but to solve problems together.
The deputy mayor said that in the coming years, building on the results of economic development, their primary objective is to increase the well-being of the people of Debrecen and to make everyone feel that “Debrecen is home”.
