The basketball festival is back: the 3×3 competition begins in Debrecen
From August 26 to 31, 2025 – from Tuesday to Sunday – the Kossuth Square in Debrecen will once again host the 3×3 World Championships – for the eleventh year in a row. The traditional summer farewell “match dumping” will begin with the U21 Nations League, and then from Friday the world’s strongest men’s and women’s professional teams will compete against each other.
On Friday, August 22, the specialists built the stands on Kossuth Square, which will offer seating for a total of a thousand fans. As in previous years, admission to the arena will be free during the week. The 3×3 Basketball World Championship will start on Tuesday, August 26.
At a press conference held on August 25, 2025, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasized that Debrecen and the 3×3 events at the end of August have now become one, and everyone is very proud that after the flower carnival there are basketball competitions in front of the Great Church.
“In addition to the fact that these events are very important for the city of Debrecen from an economic and marketing point of view, it is also important that many people get interested in sports, and basketball in particular. 3×3 is very exciting for young people because of its pulsation and the image typical of street sports. It is a great thing that this sporting event has been part of the life of the city for such a long time,” Diána Széles said.
The chairman of the committee responsible for organizing the 3×3 competitions in Debrecen, István Becsky, pointed out that despite the fact that there have been nearly 40 basketball world championships in the city in the recent past, the organization of this year’s events was approached with the same enthusiasm as previous ones.
“In the past decade, the Debrecen audience has seen many great battles in front of the Great Church, and I trust that there will be no shortage of excitement this year either. We are a little sorry that the youth European and World Youth Championships are no longer on the competition calendar this year, because in addition to the numerous Hungarian successes, these competitions have already become dear to the hearts of the Debrecen fans. At the same time, there is a lot of fantasy in the new series. We are confident that the Nations League will also appeal to visitors, in addition to the usual prize-winning competitions, where the world’s elite will compete against each other, István Becsky emphasized, who added that in case of persistent bad weather, the Oláh Gábor Street Sports Hall will be the backup venue, but they hope that it will not be necessary this year either.
According to the outstanding player of the U21 women’s national team, Mia Dávid, the first three stops of the Nations League in Szolnok were very useful in terms of team building, and they want to perform even better in Debrecen.
“I have played in Debrecen at the U18 World Championship before, it was a fantastic experience to play basketball in such a wonderful venue, in front of so many people, I trust that many people will come out to support us again. In the group stage, we did not get the French, who stand out from the six. Our goal now is to reach the final as many times as possible,” national team player said.
The boys’ team was represented by Márton Geröly, who is also confident of a good performance.
“In Szolnok, we managed to reach the final on the first day, but unfortunately we fell a little asleep after that, and on the final day, under quite interesting circumstances, we missed the final. I think that the Czechs, who have already won two tournaments, are not far ahead of us, so we also want to reach the finals as many times as possible, and if possible, we want to win at least one day,” the player summed up his expectations.
On the opening day, Tuesday, August 26, the men’s team will start with top-level match, as they will face the French in the first match five minutes after 3:00 p.m., and then they will face Ukraine at 5:00 p.m. The the women’s team will face Romania and the Czech Republic in the group, with the former starting at 4:30 p.m. and the latter starting at 6:20 p.m.
