Discover the Sweet Tradition of the Cake of the Nation!
The Cake of the Nation (in Hungary also known as as: “Országtorta”, “Az ország tortája”), Hungary’s “birthday cake,” is presented every year on the symbolic day of the birth of Hungarian statehood, during the celebrations of August 20 in Budapest.
The Origins
The Cake of the Nation competition was launched in 2007 by the Hungarian Confectioners’ Guild to promote Hungarian pastry-making and celebrate the country’s founding day with a dessert that reflects local flavors and innovation.
In 2012, the Sugar-Free Cake of the Nation competition was also introduced to show that desserts can be delicious and festive without added sugar, making them suitable for people with diabetes and those seeking healthier options.
Each year, the contest follows a new theme, and the winning cake becomes available nationwide. These desserts are more than just sweet treats—they are symbols of creativity, tradition, and national pride!
The 2025 Champions of Flavour – Bold, Beautiful, and Bursting with Meaning!
The Cake of the Nation in 2025, “DCJ Stílusgyakorlat” (DCL Style Practice), was created by László Balogh and Roland Kis from Kézműves Cukrászda (Artisan Confectionery) in Gyula.
This cake is a modern reinterpretation of the classic Dobos cake, celebrating its 140th anniversary, and it features chocolate buttercream, sour cherry jelly with cherry pálinka, almond praline, crisp caramel layer at the bottom, and vertical layering for a fresh, artistic look.
The Sugar Free Cake of the Nation in 2025, “Álmodozó” (Dreamer), was crafted by Alfréd Kovács from Édes Vonal Cukrászda (Sweet Line Pastry Shop) in Vác. This cake is a nostalgic nod to classic Hungarian desserts like “Lúdláb” and “Rigójancsi,” but without added sugar.
The winning dessert is made special by the unique combination of chocolate and sour cherries but without added sugar, and it includes: cocoa-almond sponge layers, cinnamon-chia sour cherry compote, light milk chocolate cream, crunchy chocolate-cocoa nib layer. With only 231 kcal and 13.7g of carbs per slice, it can also be a smart choice for health-conscious dessert lovers!
