Historical walks through the city continue

The Municipality of Debrecen launched its program to strengthen children’s local identity this spring, on City Day.

The city’s historical walking tours for primary school children will continue in the fall.

At a press conference held after the first walk, Deputy Mayor István Puskás emphasized that the new school year marked the launch of an old-new initiative in the city and in Debrecen’s elementary schools. As he said, “The aim of the project is for educational and cultural institutions to work together to expand primary school children’s knowledge of the city, thereby helping to strengthen their identity and attachment to Debrecen.” He noted that during the walks, students visit the city’s historical landmarks according to topics appropriate for their age group, adding that MODEM did not participate in the program in the spring, but by the fall it had become a member of the team that organizes and offers the walks to elementary school students.

Speaking about the numbers, László Türk, the director of the Debrecen School District, said that more than a thousand children took part in the city history walk in the spring thanks to the cooperation between the Debrecen School District and the institutions of the municipality. The director called these occasions “reward lessons.” Forty-four classes, or more than a thousand third- and fourth-grade students, signed up for the 44 walks in the autumn series starting on September 15. Local municipal institutions and organizations (Déri Museum, Méliusz Juhász Péter Library, and MODEM), as well as the staff of the Béla Békessy Olympic Friends  Association of the Debrecen Honvéd Sports and Student Sports Association, participated in developing the themes for the autumn city history walks and will also serve as tour guides for the walks.
