The Faculty of Humanities in Debrecen Offers Twenty‑Two Master’s Programs
The Faculty of Humanities is unique in the University of Debrecen’s history in that it has been operating continuously since the launch of its predecessor, the Royal Hungarian University of Debrecen, founded in 1912 and opened in 1914; thus, in 2026 it will begin its 112th academic year.
With the faculty offering one of the widest ranges of programs, applicants for the 2026/27 academic year can choose from 20 bachelor’s programs. Based on the experience of open days, English Studies, Communication and Media Studies, International Studies, and Psychology continue to attract strong interest, while History, Community Organization, and Ethnography also draw many applicants. Those opting to obtain a teaching qualification can now choose from 13 teacher-training programs, including English, Hungarian, German, Latin, and History. A new addition is the Teacher of Spanish Language and Culture program, which applicants may combine with English, Hungarian, German, or History.
As in previous years, applicants should pay close attention during the 2026 admission procedure as well, since they may encounter different requirements and admission score thresholds even by institution. The Faculty of Humanities continues to offer the most favorable opportunities for earning points by awarding high institutional points for applicants’ achievements, as Vice-Dean for Education Levente Takács informed university news site.
He emphasized that, for example, applicants to bachelor’s programs can earn fifty additional points for a complex intermediate-level language exam, while an advanced-level exam is worth eighty points. Further institutional bonus points can also be earned on other grounds, as the faculty strives to enable applicants to obtain the full possible one hundred points.
And what awaits students at the Faculty of Humanities once they have successfully met the admission requirements? Relying on a highly qualified teaching staff, the Faculty of Humanities offers new opportunities to applicants. In addition, it provides the widest range of language learning options: approximately 15 languages can be studied, including not only major European languages but also, among others, Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, and even Catalan.
Alongside language learning, numerous opportunities are available for studying abroad and for completing professional internships at companies, thereby supporting graduates’ entry into the labor market after obtaining their degree.
After the successful completion of a bachelor’s program, further studies are available at the master’s level in every field: applicants can choose from a total of 22 master’s programs. Among the most popular are the Translator and Interpreter, Psychology, and Cultural Mediation and Museology master’s programs. Unique within the range is the English Language Teaching master’s program, which, unlike the usual four-semester programs, lasts only one year, that is, two semesters. This program trains professionals well acquainted with facilitating the acquisition of English, who can teach in language schools and courses, as they become familiar with the most important aspects of language pedagogy and methodology. The Museology master’s program mentioned above also stands out from others in terms of its broad scope and practical orientation.
The faculty offers further learning opportunities even after obtaining a degree in the form of postgraduate specialization programs. Among the most popular are Systemic Coaching and the German Language Officer and Translator programs.
Graduates’ employment prospects are supported by the faculty’s relationships with economic stakeholders. Companies and enterprises operating in the region contribute by offering internship placements and courses taught in Hungarian and foreign languages, helping graduates find suitable jobs. In addition, culture and talent development have traditionally been important areas for the Faculty of Humanities. Through the Arts Center, the Bán Imre College for Cultural Studies, and the Hatvani István College for Advanced Studies, the faculty provides its most talented and highest-achieving students with preparation for successful teaching and scientific research work, which is virtually an antechamber to PhD studies and the attainment of a doctoral degree. Dedicated students can pursue the latter in the faculty’s doctoral schools, as explained by Dean Róbert Keményfi.
