Biotechnology, chemical engineering, applied mathematics. These are just a few of the courses offered by the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Debrecen, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary. At the anniversary ceremony, it was said that the Faculty had become a regional centre of development and innovation.

With 150 students, the predecessor of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Debrecen started its activities 75 years ago. On this occasion, a jubilee celebration was held, where Dean Ferenc Kun pointed out that in the past decades, several new fields of science and education were first introduced at the university.

“We also aim to expand our range of courses by launching and creating new ones. We have initiated the creation of a new basic course in biotechnology, which we were able to launch this year in English with a freshman class of almost 40 students,” he said.

Today, the faculty has developed into a regional centre for development and innovation, committed to quality professional training. Rector of the University of Debrecen Zoltán Szilvássy  emphasised that the University of Debrecen has close links with the companies that come here, and that industrialisation based on natural sciences has been given priority.

“BMW, Thyssenkrupp, Continental, the big three Chinese, EVE Energy, CATL and Semcorp, they are all here because of each other. And what do they need? The knowledge centre. They turn to us,” Rector of the University of Debrecen Zoltán Szilvássy said.

The faculty currently has 2800 students, a third of whom are foreign students. They come from almost 100 countries to study here. Chancellor of the Faculty of Natural Sciences Zoltán Bács said that the research and scientific achievements of the Faculty would move the world and the university forward.

“We are very proud of our Faculty of Science and Technology, its achievements, its contribution to the rankings, to the achievements of the university and the field of natural sciences, because this year, as last year, we have made significant progress, both in the field and in the university as a whole,” Chancellor Zoltán Bács said.

The 75th anniversary of the Faculty of Science and Technology also saw the presentation of jubilee prizes, the launch of a series of programmes, and a publication.
