The Government Plans to Build a New Train Station in Debrecen

A new station may be built as part of the renovation of the section of Line 100 between Debrecen and Nyíregyháza.

Today, trains still speed by on the northern outskirts of Debrecen, at the end of Kassai Road, on the stretch opposite the public cemetery. However, a new train stop will be built here as part of the renovation of the section of Line 100 between Debrecen and Nyíregyháza, according to a Facebook post by Zsolt Tárkányi, a member of the National Assembly.

As he wrote, within a few years, anyone arriving in Debrecen by train from the direction of Nyíregyháza or Mátészalka and heading, for example, to the university campuses on Kassai Road, Csapó Street, or Nagyerdő, will not need to go to the Main Station but can transfer here to buses, and reach their destination significantly faster than they can today.

“Currently, it’s even faster to drive from Nyíregyháza to the northern part of Debrecen, because even though the train ride between the two cities takes 30 minutes, it takes at least as long to get here from the Main Station via public transportation—right where the train is currently speeding through,” he pointed out.

He believes that if we want to reduce the number of vehicles in our cities, we must create a travel alternative that can compete with driving through such rail improvements. This is what they’re working on: speeds of 160 km/h, state-of-the-art new IC motor trains, and new stops between Debrecen and Nyíregyháza.
