The Hungarian Reformed Charity Service also helps those in crisis in Debrecen
Due to the extreme cold weather, the Hungarian Reformed Charity Service has launched its Felebarát (Neighbor) program, which aids homeless people and those in need struggling with financial difficulties during the winter crisis period, the charitable organization told MTI on Wednesday.
In the first week of January, the program began in Budapest with a tea distribution service, as well as street social work including the distribution of blankets, sleeping bags, and sandwiches. In the coming weeks, the organization will distribute hot meals at over 14 locations nationwide, helping people struggling with financial hardship with more than two thousand portions of food.
The program, which runs until the end of February, considers it a priority task to support not only homeless people but also families and elderly people living in housing crises; therefore, families in need are supported with firewood.
They emphasized that it is also possible to join the Felebarát program through in-kind or financial donations, as well as volunteer work. Until the end of February, the organization is announcing a seasonal clothing drive: donations of winter coats, boots, hats, gloves, socks, warm sweaters, and trousers are welcome.
The intention to donate goods must first be indicated to the aid organization via the website tamogatas.jobbadni.hu; following confirmation, donations are accepted at national warehouses.
The Felebarát program can be supported online via the website adomany.jobbadni.hu, by bank transfer to account number 10702019-85008898-51100005 (reference: Felebarát), and by calling the donation line at 1358.
They added that volunteer helpers can take part in the preparation and delivery of food distributions in the following cities and towns: Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, Hódmezővásárhely, Ózd, Pápa, Sárospatak, Mezőgyán, Geszt. The exact dates and tasks will be posted on the onkentes.jobbadni.hu platform, where those wishing to volunteer can also register.
The Hungarian Reformed Church draws the public’s attention to the fact that if they encounter a person in need of help in a public place, they should notify the homeless care dispatch service. The contact details of the dispatch services can be found on the social sector portal. If the person found on the street is not communicating or responding, the National Ambulance Service must be notified immediately via the 112 emergency number, the statement says.
