The ice rink is already being built in Debrecen’s main square
Preparations for the construction of the approximately 750-square-meter ice rink began this week. From November 5, schools can register for appointments so that student groups can skate together for free in the heart of the city.
One of the special features of Advent in Debrecen for many years now has been the 750-square-meter ice rink, which also has a 120-meter corridor, allowing skaters to skate around the Kossuth monument in the main square.
Although there is no ice on the square in front of the Great Church yet, the construction of the ice rink has already begun this week.
The coolers arrived first, and now the shape of the ice corridor is starting to take shape on the main square. The popular attraction of the Advent market requires precise preparation, careful planning, and professional execution this year as well.
“Most often the problem is that the area is not horizontal due to the drainage solutions in such a square; we actually have to fill the area, which we have to clean up nicely afterwards. In fact, we encounter different obstacles at each location, but with precise planning these can all be solved,” explained construction manager Gergő Csatos.
“Last year, the skating rink had around 30 thousand paying guests, and 9 thousand students were able to skate on the ice for free, which not only provides a community experience but also provides young people with a sports opportunity,” emphasized Deputy Mayor Diána Széles regarding the ice rink under construction. Schools participating in the “Move, Debrecen!” Initiative will be able to register for free appointments this year as well from November 5.
“From 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m., when we provide free skating opportunities to Debrecen schools, students will come from school and have an opportunity to play sports together with their class or with the participants of the Mozdulj, Debrecen! school program,” emphasized Deputy Mayor Diána Széles.

The Advent skating rink is scheduled to open its doors on November 22 in the heart of the city, on Kossuth Square.
