The Külsővásártér – Szoboszlói Road junction development is progressing at a good pace
Mayor László Papp, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles, and Ibolya Aurélia Orosz held a press site visit at the development location on December 15, 2025.
Mayor László Papp emphasized that four major junction developments are currently underway in the city, with the Külsővásártér project being the first, launched in 2025. He reported that progress at this site has reached 75 percent, and two-lane traffic has already been restored across much of the junction, although minor restrictions remain. The contractor is required to finish the work by June 2026, but the mayor expressed hope that completion will come sooner.
He also acknowledged that the construction has made access to Szoboszlói Road Primary School more challenging. To support parents, the municipality has rented nine parking spaces in front of the Szatmári department store for the duration of the school year. These spaces, located closer to the sidewalk and the school, are intended to ease access and enhance safety for families.
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasized that the junction upgrades are designed to improve traffic flow across the city, noting that such developments would not have been possible without government support. She expressed deep gratitude to the Government of Hungary, noting that Debrecen is experiencing a level of transport development that the city could not have achieved on its own. She emphasized that, guided by the needs of residents, the municipality is working in partnership with the Government to build a city where prosperity, safety, and transport security are embedded in urban growth. She added that “In the long term, our goal is to encourage as many people as possible to choose public transport as a viable alternative. We are already taking steps in this direction in close cooperation with the Government of Hungary.”
Aurélia Ibolya Orosz, the district’s local government representative, expressed her appreciation to both the Government of Hungary and the Municipality of Debrecen for making the development possible. She also extended her gratitude to residents and commuters for their patience during the renovation period. Noting that many people had reached out to her regarding the parking facility, she highlighted her thanks to the school principal for consistently supporting dialogue with parents throughout the process.
