According to the rules of the American Film Academy, each country can nominate one film in the international film category for the 98th Oscar Awards to be awarded next March.
The body that decides on the official Hungarian Oscar nominations selected László Nemes Jeles’ film from 24 feature-length films.
In the most prestigious competition in the film world, the members of the American Film Academy will select the five films nominated for the award from among the official Oscar nominations of the countries. The list of nominees will be announced on January 22, 2026, and the Oscars will be presented on March 15 in Los Angeles.
The new film by the Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA award-winning director László Nemes, who made films “Son of Saul” and “Sunset,” was produced with the support of the National Film Institute as a European co-production and was inspired by the story of the director’s family.
The Orphan is set in Budapest in the spring of 1957. After the failed revolution, a large part of Hungarian society surrendered due to reprisals, the disappearance of revolutionaries and resistance fighters, and hopelessness, and the Kádár era began, which lasted more than three decades. 12-year-old Andor is raised by his mother alone; the boy still hopes that his father, who disappeared in the war, will return. One day, a man appears at their home, claiming to be Andor’s father. The boy refuses to consider the stranger his father. However, the man moves in with them, and the boy is forced to come to terms with his illusions. As the rift between mother and son deepens, Andor decides to save his family from the man at any cost.
The main character of the film is Bojtorján Barabás; his mother is played by Andrea Waskovics, and Grégory Gadebois appears alongside them as a featured character.
The movie Orphan was written by director László Nemes Jeles and Clara Royer. It’s produced by Ildikó Kemény and Ferenc Szále from Pioneer Pictures. The team also includes Mátyás Erdély as the cinematographer, Márton Ágh as the production designer, Andrea Flesch as the costume designer, Tamás Zányi as the sound designer, Péter Politzer as the editor, and Éva Zabezsinszkij as the casting director.
