The power of community has a positive effect on everyone
The Municipal Social Service of the City of Debrecen (VSZSZ) organized its program traditionally titled “Let’s Compete Outdoors!” for the 23rd time on September 11, 2025; this time it was held indoors due to the rainy weather, enjoying the hospitality of the DEMKI Józsai Community House.
The aim of the event, among other things, is to draw the attention of the elderly to the fact that physical and mental activity is a basic condition for maintaining health, physical and mental well-being, and quality of life in this stage of life, and to this end, as many people as possible should be involved in active community formation. The playful event also provides an opportunity for members of the seniors’ clubs operating in the city to meet each other. The change of venue due to rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of the participants at all, as many people came to the event and there was general good cheer.
As part of the program, Diána Széles, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, also greeted those present. As she emphasized, “The series of events like this and similar ones in the city, organized by the dedicated staff of the VSZSZ and DEMKI, serve the purpose of allowing the elderly, among them typically those who become lonely due to the loss of their spouse, to be in a community. One of the main goals of the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative, which is very popular among the elderly, is community building, not just health preservation and orientation towards a healthy lifestyle. I believe that we live much longer and happier in a community!” encouraging those present to invite their contemporaries to these occasions filled with love and good humor, since everyone can find friends here. The Deputy Mayor asked the participants to be “ambassadors” and promoters of these community events.
Róbert Juráskó, the local government representative of the Józsa district, expressed his joy that he always sees happy faces at similar events, and this is the case now as well. He also experiences that the elderly like to compete just as much as the younger ones. He also encouraged, in accordance with the spirit of the place, primarily the people of Józsa, to regularly visit the local community center and the events organized in the district, with which the city would like to say a kind of thank you to all those who have worked and are working for the community of Debrecen.
