The results of the inspection series have arrived, with Debrecen being one of the locations

The condition of 790 vehicles was assessed in four large cities—Budapest, Debrecen, Győr, and Szeged—this year within the framework of the 29th Road Transport Environmental Action, between September 15 and 19, the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM) announced to MTI on Friday.

As part of the ongoing program accompanying European Mobility Week, experts inspected a total of 790 vehicles—456 passenger cars, 296 light commercial vehicles, 9 heavy goods vehicles, and 9 articulated trucks. During the inspections, problems were encountered in 133 cases, of which 84 were identified as deficiencies.

“During the measurements carried out as part of the campaign, 54 vehicles required technical inspection, and in 38 cases the vehicles exceeded the upper limit of harmful emissions specified in their environmental classification by several times. These vehicles must undergo periodic technical inspections,” as reported, highlighting that the campaign draws attention every year to the fact that it is not enough for the vehicle to be in good condition only during the periodic technical inspection; it must be maintained continuously.

“With regular maintenance of our vehicles, we can contribute to traffic safety, as well as reducing harmful emissions and cleaner air,” added the Ministry of Transport.

According to the summary, this year the inspection took place at three locations a day in Budapest. Experts from government offices inspected the condition of vehicles at one location each in Debrecen, Győr, and Szeged. The vehicles were tested using technologies also used at technical inspection stations, with petrol vehicles using a gas analyzer and diesel vehicles using a smoke detector. During the visual inspection, leaks, environmentally harmful defects, and traces of irregular modifications were looked for.

The ministry said that thanks to the campaign that has been running for several decades, the experiences can now be compared over a longer period of time. “Around the turn of the millennium, half of diesel-engined vehicles and two-thirds of petrol-engined vehicles fully complied with the regulations. Thanks to technological developments, stricter criteria, and regular inspections, in recent years, experts have found significantly fewer significant defects in the vehicles tested. This year, 80.3 percent of the 456 passenger cars, 86.5 percent of the 296 light commercial vehicles, and 89.7 percent of the 29 heavy goods vehicles tested fully met expectations, as described, also indicating that the articulated trucks proved to be flawless, but due to the low number, no general conclusion can be drawn from this.

It was announced that while the environmental status of diesel-powered vehicles was still significantly behind that of gasoline-powered vehicles a quarter of a century ago, this turned around a decade ago, and this year they have already achieved a better compliance rate, thanks to the AdBlue systems used by newer vehicles, which greatly reduce the environmental impact of diesel-powered vehicles.

According to the ministry, the average age of all passenger vehicles tested was 17 years, which exceeds the average age of 16.2 years in 2024 published by the Central Statistical Office. The average annual mileage of passenger vehicles of 13,072 kilometers was almost doubled by light commercial vehicles (25,507), while the average annual mileage of trucks over 3.5 tons was 35,421 kilometers.

However, it was pointed out that since the latest gasoline- and diesel-powered, electric, or hybrid vehicles were typically left out of the sampling, the measured data do not fully reflect the indicators of the domestic vehicle fleet.

According to the statement, “If the vehicle failed to meet the emission limit value prescribed by its relevant environmental department during the measurements, it was sanctioned with a verbal warning or by being ordered to undergo a technical inspection. The procedure was the same at the different measurement locations. While drivers were only given a warning for minor violations, the experts conducting the inspection ordered them to undergo a technical inspection for multiple violations.

The most common cause of breakdowns is that the necessary maintenance is not carried out and the vehicle is driven in poor operating conditions with many times the permitted emissions of harmful substances.”

They added that faults in newer vehicles can be caused by unprofessional intervention or by modifications that promise increased performance while maintaining unchanged consumption. Unprofessional interventions also reduce the lifespan of more polluting and noisier vehicles.

The announcement highlights that regularly checking the condition of vehicles helps protect both personal and public safety and health.
