The second-level heat alert issued by the National Chief Medical Officer for the entire country is in effect from midnight on Thursday and will last until midnight on Sunday. According to the meteorological forecast, much warmer than usual weather is expected in the coming days.

In a joint statement, the National Center for Public Health and Pharmacy and the National Directorate General for Disaster Management of the Ministry of the Interior warned that prolonged heat places a serious burden on our bodies, especially on young children, the elderly, chronically ill and pregnant women.

They asked to look out for each other, especially those who live alone, are elderly or have limited mobility.

They advised drinking more fluids than usual,  avoiding alcohol, caffeinated drinks and sugary soft drinks, wearing light-coloured, well-ventilated clothes made of natural materials, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses when outdoors, using sunscreen appropriate for skin type and showering several times with lukewarm water.

They called it particularly important not to take small children for walks in the heat and never leave children or pets in a parked car for even a minute.

It is recommended that if you use air conditioning, do not set the temperature below 27 degrees and turn it off occasionally to avoid joint problems. For those who cannot relax in an air-conditioned environment at home, the emergency services website has addresses of air-conditioned rooms that are available to everyone.

According to the forecast, sunny weather is expected on Thursday with veiled clouds, but the sunshine may be more filtered due to the Saharan dust coming over. The air will warm up to between 31 and 35 degrees during the day.
