The section of Sámsoni Road from Kapitány Street to the city limits is now open to traffic with 2×2 lanes
Starting today, the section of Sámsoni Road from Kapitány Street to the city limits will be open to traffic in 2×2 lanes. Mayor László Papp and László Tasó, Ministerial Commissioner for the Development of Road and Rail Transport in Northeastern Hungary, held a press conference on the site on October 15, 2025, to discuss the details of the development.
Mayor László Papp stated that “We have reached the intermediate stage in a very long-term transport development, as the section of Main Road 471 from Kapitány Street to the city limits will be put into service during the construction.” He recalled that the reconstruction of the main road started several years ago, and in the first step, the sections outside the city limits were renovated, and now, thanks to government support, the inner-city sections can be developed.
“This section will show what the traffic situation will be like when it is possible to drive on two lanes all the way to Kassai Road. Extremely important transport developments are taking place in the life of Debrecen, especially in 2024-2025, and the years ahead will be similar, since in addition to the development of Sámsoni Road, three large transport junctions—which play an important role in the city’s transport—are part of this program, and a separate level junction is being built on Main Road 354 in parallel. Next year, the reconstruction of the intersection of Ótemető Street and Rakovszky Road-Árpád Square will begin,” the city manager outlined.
László Papp said that several people were interested in why these modernizations had to be carried out at the same time. The mayor explained this by saying that the financial resources are available now and must be used now. He noted that in 2026, when all the affected junctions are completed, a much more ideal traffic situation will develop.
“Another very important development affects the life of this part of the city, the eastern internal traffic corridor, the starting point of which is the junction of Road 471 behind us. This development is already part of the geometry that designates this new transport route in the direction of Road 48 as the starting point of the eastern transport corridor. We hope to be able to start its construction next year; this will be implemented from TOP plus funds,” said the mayor.
He noted that there is a legal problem at the Acsádi Road intersection, the solution of which is currently underway. He said that the development of Sámsoni Road affects many interests, as there are traders and business owners along the route, with whom they have contacted, and they hope that the negotiations will lead to results.
László Tasó thanked those driving on the affected road section for their patience. He said that additional work is still expected on this section, but it will not disrupt traffic. He added that the public procurement procedure that will enable the completion of the road will be announced this week, as there is still a section of approximately one kilometer left to the railway, which is part of the development program for the Debrecen-Nyíregyháza-Záhony-Csap line.
He highlighted that the renovation of the Debrecen-Nyíregyháza section is an important stage in railway history, as it is not only part of the core network but also part of the European transport corridor. It was stated that the platforms at the stops and stations will be built to a height of 50 centimeters, as well as platform roofs, elevators, underpasses, and all street lighting and noise protection walls, which will be completed in the coming period. László Tasó added that P+R and B+R parking systems will be built in some places and emphasized that all stations and stops will be renewed and all overhead wires will be replaced.
Regarding the development of Line 100, László Papp stated that the public procurement procedure will be announced in a design-and-build format, which means that the designer and the contractor of this section will be selected together. In his opinion, this provides security that the project will run to completion.
He noted that the separate level crossing of Main Road 471 and Railway Line 100, as well as the reconstruction of the Vágóhíd Street overpass, are also part of this program, as the overpass is currently a neuralgic point of the city, which is not used by buses and trucks due to weight restrictions, but this development will also solve one of the most important transport development needs.
