The Tócóskert Library Opens Its Doors at a New Location

The Tócóskert Library has moved from István Road to 46 Kishegyesi Road, and from 5 January 2026 it welcomes readers in a much larger, modern, and more comfortable space than before.

On the very first day, many people stopped by the library in Tócóskert and borrowed reading materials. Book lovers living in the neighbourhood were delighted with the new location.

One of the visitors said: “I really like this new library, although I used to go to the Méliusz Juhász Péter Library. I’ve loved reading since I was very little, and I’m happy that the library is now so close — I don’t have to go far.”

The library on István Road had been operating in an old family house since 1985, but now the institution welcomes readers from Tócóskert in a modern and easily accessible environment. A book‑lending machine has also been installed next to the entrance.

Kovács Béla Lóránt, Director of the Méliusz Juhász Péter Library, emphasized that residents of Debrecen can use it free of charge and visit at any time, as a 24‑hour automated machine is available. The machine next to the small market is used daily, so another one was needed. This new machine is in a better location, and the library is two and a half times larger than the previous one, making it far more worthy of the citizens of Debrecen.

The collection of the Tócóskert Library has been expanded primarily with fantasy books and comic books, based on readers’ interests. The spacious, bright interior now includes cosy reading corners, and separate areas have been created for children and teenagers. On the opening day, a storytelling session was held for the youngest visitors. The institution also has a diaper‑changing room, making it easy to visit even with very small children.

Deputy Mayor Diána Széles said that “The future is for libraries not only to operate, but also to convey values. We should not only lend books, but also build community. Debrecen is a city where values matter, and this is our community — the community of Tócóskert.”

The new, modern Tócóskert Library was created as part of a municipal investment. Local representatives András Varga and János Sánta, representing the districts of Tócóskert and Tócóvölgy, also attended the opening. In total, library services are available at seven locations across Debrecen.
