The University of Debrecen continues to be among the best

This year’s university grade point thresholds were announced, with the University of Debrecen increasing its student numbers by nearly 10%.

Two-thirds of the nearly 130,000 applicants chose a bachelor’s degree; their average age is 27. The most sought-after majors are still economics, engineering, and information technology.

As the Hungarian Education Office wrote, more and more people are choosing teacher training, including natural science majors, with more than two thousand choosing the latter, and more and more people from vocational training would also move on to higher education: the number of applicants from this field has increased one and a half times in the past three years.

“This is the third year that more than 120,000 people have applied to higher education. In Hungary, alone in Europe, around eight out of ten students can start their university studies on state scholarships, primarily in technical, natural science, medical, and teacher training,” State Secretary responsible for Higher Education, Vocational and Adult Education and Youth, Veronika Varga-Bajusz announced in advance, adding that by now every second student attends a rural university, so the relationship between the capital and the countryside has also become more equal, and rural universities have become stronger.

This is supported by the fact that, similarly to last year, the University of Debrecen remains the most popular among rural higher education institutions among applicants.

This year as well, the most people applied to ELTE, more than 18.2 thousand. The University of Debrecen came in second in the national total with 10.8 thousand applicants, and the University of Szeged came in third with 8.8 thousand applicants.

According to Eduline’s summary, the most first-time applicants were attracted by the business and management major (4,484 people), followed by psychology (2,849), commerce and marketing (2,677), law (2,655), and general medicine (2,625).

Last year, the University of Debrecen admitted more than 7,500 applicants in the general procedure. In addition, the institution admitted more than 400 new students in the cross-semester procedure, more than 2,200 to English-language programmes, and 249 to doctoral programmes in the first round.

This year, ELTE admitted the most students again, followed by the University of Debrecen, the University of Szeged, and the University of Pécs. The Debrecen institution increased its student population by nearly 10 percent.

To give a few examples, in the undergraduate programme of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Debrecen, the university entrance score for mechanical engineering students was 276 points. In humanities, the limit was again very high for psychology: 464 points, which was close to the maximum. At the Faculty of Arts, someone with 366 points can be a mathematics student at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, but the limit for dental studies was also high: 417 points.

In the case of the Reformed Theological University of Debrecen, it was possible to enter the teaching major with 223 points.

The detailed entrance score limits can be found on the website of the Hungarian Education Office.

The “Pont Ott” party awaited those interested in several locations across the country so that prospective students could not only get excited but also celebrate together. This time the central event was in Veszprém, but such parties were organised in larger university cities as well. In addition to Veszprém, Sopron, Pécs, Szeged, Eger, Gyula, Győr, Nyíregyháza, Kecskemét, and Miskolc, Debrecen was also the venue for the event.

Since the date of the announcement did not fall during the Campus Festival this time, the “Cívis”city  awaited the affected at its sports campus. The leaders of the University of Debrecen are expected to present the results in detail on Thursday.
