Third-degree heat warning extended until Friday midnight
The national chief medical officer will extend the third-degree heat alert until midnight on Friday, based on the forecast of HungaroMet Hungarian Meteorological Service Nonprofit Zrt., the National Centre for Public Health and Pharmacy (NNGYK) and the National Directorate General for Disaster Management (OKF) of the Ministry of the Interior, which announced to MTI on Wednesday.
In their statement, they wrote that extreme heat should be expected in the coming days, which can test the body both physically and mentally.
The most vulnerable groups continue to be young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with cardiovascular diseases. The authorities once again ask everyone to pay special attention to themselves and each other in the heat.
“Regular fluid consumption is especially important during hot weather, and drinking water should always be available, whether at work or while traveling!” they warned.
They recommend that anyone who can, avoid being in the hot sun during the midday hours. If you are still outdoors, wear light, well-ventilated clothing and sunglasses with UV protection, and use high-factor sunscreen and lip balm. Those who can should spend at least two to three hours a day in a cool, air-conditioned room; information on their availability can be found on the disaster management website.
They added that it is important not to leave children or pets in a parked car for even a few minutes. “If anyone sees a child or pet left in a car in the sun, call the emergency number 112 immediately! “, they asked.
In their statement, they reminded everyone that a fire ban has been in effect throughout the country since Wednesday. It is forbidden to light fires in forests and within two hundred metres of them, even in designated fire pits.
Vegetation is dry everywhere and can ignite from the slightest spark or heat source, so it is not advisable to light a fire anywhere outdoors. Everyone can cook or grill in their own garden, but it is important that the fire is never left unattended for a single minute.
The latest information on heat alerts is also available through the free-to-download VÉSZ application operated by the Disaster Management Directorate.
The application sends real-time notifications about the duration and level of alerts, thus helping you prepare for extreme weather situations.
