Three-Kilometre Stretch of Debrecen’s Northern Bypass Reduced to Two Lanes for an Extended Period
Work on the extension of Domokos Márton Road is progressing well, according to the contractor Duna Aszfalt Zrt.
The first section of Domokos Márton Road was built as a municipal investment between Balmazújvárosi Road (Main Road 33) and the eastern end of Vezér Street by January 2020. The road is 1.1 kilometres long, with two lanes and a width of more than 3 metres. As part of the project, public lighting was installed and drainage infrastructure was also completed. Even at that time there were plans — later agreed between the municipality and the government — to extend the road from its current end point to Main Road 354, the northern bypass of Debrecen, using state funding.
A new 2×1-lane road approximately 1.5 kilometres long is being built between Main Road 354 and Vezér Street, which will connect to Main Road 354 via a grade-separated junction.
Duna Aszfalt Zrt. has now issued a statement saying that, in order to carry out demolition works, earthworks and road structure construction, as well as the later bridge construction works, it will be necessary to reintroduce the temporary traffic restriction already applied during the construction of the bridge’s central support and proven to function properly on Main Road 354.
Between kilometre sections 1+700 and 3+100 of the main road, the 2×2 lanes will be reduced to 2×1 lanes.
In practical terms, this means traffic will still be able to move freely in both directions without any traffic-light restrictions, but only on one lane in each direction instead of the current two.
The restriction is expected to be in force from 16 March until mid-September.
The lifting of the bridge girders of the structure being built over Main Road 354 — depending on weather conditions — is expected to take place in the first half of April. During the installation of the bridge girders, the construction of the scaffolding and the necessary specialist works, temporary half-carriageway traffic stoppages are expected under police traffic control. The affected works are expected to take approximately two days each. Traffic stoppages will likely occur during working hours, with a schedule of 10–15 minute traffic stops followed by 20 minutes of traffic flow.
The new road could relieve several heavily used routes, meaning traffic on Balmazújvárosi Road and Vezér Street may decrease, while Böszörményi Road could also be partially bypassed.
“If the entire road is completed, it will be a logical route for those travelling from the north towards the central or southern parts of the city, and running parallel to Böszörményi Road it will also be able to fulfil a significant traffic-relieving function,” said Mayor László Papp previously.
In addition, the project will create new road connections to the facilities of major companies such as BMW, Thyssenkrupp, and EWE Power.
The road is being built with state funding at a gross cost of HUF 8.25 billion.
