Traffic restrictions on the northern bypass road in Debrecen will be gradually lifted
Since summer, the road has been narrowed to two lanes over one and a half kilometers. First, the lane width will be increased, and then drivers will be able to travel again on two lanes.
The construction of the continuation of Domokos Márton Road is progressing well, the contractor Duna Aszfalt Zrt. announced. Currently underway is the construction work for the embankment and bridge as well as utility relocations and hydraulic engineering. Depending on the weather, embankment construction, hydraulic engineering work, and utility relocations are also expected to continue. The construction of the intermediate support of the overpass over main road 354 is expected to be completed by mid-December 2025.
In line with that, the traffic restriction narrowing the current 2×2 lanes to 2×1 lanes between kilometer markers 1+700 and 3+100 of main road 354 will gradually be removed. In the first phase, the currently available traffic lane will be widened by November 21 (from 3.25 meters to a minimum of 5.5 meters). After that, traffic is expected to be able to move again on 2×2 lanes along the entire section of the main road by December 20. However, reduced speed limits and edge-of-pavement signs will remain in place.
The first section of Domokos Márton Road was built as a municipal investment between Balmazújvárosi Road (main road 33) and the eastern end of Vezér Street by January 2020. The road is 1.1 kilometers long and over 3 meters wide, with two lanes. As part of the project, street lighting was installed, and sewage was also addressed. At that time, there was already discussion – followed by an agreement between the city and the government – about continuing the road with state funding from its current endpoint to main road 354, i.e., to the northern bypass of Debrecen.
A new road, approximately 1.5 kilometers long with 2×1 lanes, is being built between main road 354 and Vezér Street, which will connect to main road 354 via a grade-separated junction.
The road could relieve several high-traffic roads, for example, traffic on Balmazújvárosi Road and Vezér Street may decrease, and Böszörményi Road could also be replaced here.
“If the entire road is completed, it will be an obvious route for those coming from the north towards the central or southern parts of the city and, parallel to Böszörményi Road, it will also be able to serve as a significant relief route,” said Mayor László Papp earlier.
In addition, new road connections will be built to the plants of major companies such as BMW, ThyssenKrupp, and Ewe Power.
The road is being built from state funds, at a total gross cost of HUF 8.25 billion.
