Work is underway on harmonizing the schedules within Debrecen’s ingetrated fare system
The integrated fare system came into effect last December 24, meaning that county and national passes are now accepted on the services of DKV, while DKV passes are accepted on MÁV-Volán services within the city limits.
As a result, more people are purchasing county passes: while in January last year DKV sold 41,000 passes, this January it sold 17,000. At the same time, more and more people are using public transportation. According to recent experience, those who travel only within the city by public transport tend to choose the DKV pass. “Students and pensioners are keen to purchase the discounted county pass for HUF 945, but over the past month and a half we have also seen that many people are buying national passes,” said Szabolcs Tóth, CEO of DKV Zrt.
Thanks to fare integration, residents living in the outer districts of Debrecen can now travel on several types of services with a single pass; for example, those living in Haláp can board 52 regional and 26 local services on weekdays.
In total, 2,800 bus, tram, and trolleybus services are complemented by 1,200 regional buses and trains on weekdays.
The harmonization of timetables is already underway, and DKV is also conducting passenger counts to support this process. “We are examining where there are capacities that have become unnecessary or are less utilized, and we will redirect these services to routes where we see higher demand,” explained Szabolcs Tóth.
According to experience, passenger traffic has increased in recent times on buses serving the industrial parks. Timetables on these lines have already been modified, and from March 2 DKV will also launch new services to the economic zones.
