Work Starts on the First Key Junction of Debrecen’s Eastern Transport Corridor

The inner traffic corridor that will relieve traffic on Budai Nagy Antal, Hétvezér, Veres Péter, and Sólyom streets will start from the area between the bus turnaround in front of the former refugee camp and the city boundary sign. The junction of Sámsoni Road and the traffic corridor, as well as the first few hundred meters of the road, are being built by the Ministry of Construction and Transport so that Sámsoni Road, which is currently being widened to four lanes, will not have to be dismantled later.

The works began with the construction of the stormwater drainage ditch. The machinery will excavate approximately 800 to 1,000 cubic meters of sand per day, a process that is expected to last about two weeks.

The further sections of the inner bypass road will be built by the municipality using EU funds. In the first phase, using EU funding of 6.2 billion forints, the road will be constructed from the Benedek Mihály Street junction to Main Road No. 48. Similar to the Western Ring Road, a bicycle path will also be built alongside this section, with a total length of 3.2 kilometers. In order for the investment to be completed, the city council amended the city’s spatial planning instruments at its most recent meeting.

According to municipal representative Viktor Papp, this will be one of the most important traffic spots in the eastern part of the city. “I trust that this will provide fast, safe, and convenient transportation for those living here, as well as for the population of the agglomeration in the eastern part of the city. This is a road section of more than 3.5 kilometers that will be built in the Meggyes area, following the route of the high-voltage power line,” said Viktor Papp.

The entire eastern inner traffic corridor will be 11.5 kilometers long and will be a newly aligned road with two lanes (2×1). The goal is not to create one continuous corridor, but rather to connect the main traffic routes that run radially toward the center of Debrecen at different intersection points.

According to Szabolcs Antal, Mayor of Hajdúsámson, Debrecen’s economic development results in increased traffic loads on the roads, which makes alternative transport routes necessary. “On weekdays, especially in the morning and afternoon hours, Main Road No. 48 or Main Road No. 471 are heavily congested, and this traffic corridor will relieve these radially inbound roads as early as the outer part of the city.”

The starting junction and the first 400-meter section are planned to be completed later this year while construction of the first phase is expected to begin in the second half of the year.
