Workforce Doubles at Richter’s Debrecen Site in a Few Years
Richter Gedeon has just completed a very successful financial year. Last year, the 125-year-old pharmaceutical company increased its revenue by a strong 10 per cent, exceeding HUF 900 billion – an outstanding performance among medium-sized pharmaceutical companies in Europe. The company’s growth has been driven primarily by expanding exports, with one of its key growth areas being the pharmaceutical technology of the future.
“More than 90 per cent of our revenue comes from exports, and we are present on all six inhabited continents with a wide range of products. On a personal level, I am also particularly proud that biotechnology, our newest business area, has made an increasingly significant contribution. Our division recorded the strongest growth in terms of sales,” said Erik Bogsch, Director of the Biotechnology Business Unit at Richter Gedeon.
One of the key drivers of this growth is the Debrecen Biotechnology Site, which has also become a major contributor to the city’s economy. Nearly 700 people work at the site, including several hundred highly qualified specialists, producing medicines for the global market. The Debrecen facility is a comprehensive pharmaceutical centre unlike any other in Central Europe, and it continues to develop in line with changing market demands. “Richter’s response to change is development itself. Looking back just two or three years, the workforce at this site has doubled. That represents tremendous growth, and we have had to support it by adapting our processes. We have expanded continuously, and our active pharmaceutical ingredient production and sterile manufacturing operations have had to grow alongside us,” emphasised Zsolt Baranyai, Head of the Debrecen Site.
Richter has also stated to be working on building a professional community and a knowledge base in Debrecen as the foundation for a new era of development, in which improving efficiency will become an even greater priority.
