World Cleanup Day: Debrecen also took part in the cleanup

World Cleanup Day—the most significant annual global collaboration against the waste problem—mobilized 19.1 million volunteers worldwide in 2024. During the movement involving 198 countries and territories, participants collected nearly 218,704 tons of waste. The importance of the initiative is shown by the fact that it is officially included among the international holidays of the United Nations from 2024.

More than 120 employees of local companies cleaned up an area of nearly 60 square kilometers of Erdőspuszták, while TEVA employees made the running trails of Nagyerdő waste-free.

Debrecen joined the international action in 2025 with the local movement “Debrecenben kéne szedni” (It should be picked up in Debrecen). “The aim of the initiative is twofold: on the one hand, to draw attention to the serious problem of illegal waste dumping, and on the other hand, to strengthen the environmental responsibility of local companies,” EDC Nonprofit Kft. writes in a statement.

The program did not end in a single day. The participating organizations remain committed to sustainability, environmental protection, and social responsibility in the long term.

The event was also realized this year with the participation of local companies, so the dedicated colleagues of Contemporary Amperex Technology Hungary Kft., Debreceni Sportcentrum Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft., Deufol Hungary Kft., Diehl Aviation Hungary Kft., EDC Debrecen Kft., Eve Power Hungary Kft., Schaeffler Debrecen, Sensirion Hungary Kft., Synergy Construction Hungary Kft., Szinorg Universal Zrt., Transcosmos Kft., and Trans-Sped Kft. collected the garbage together.

The enthusiastic companies were awarded a certificate of recognition by the city of Debrecen again this year.

Debrecen’s initiative fits perfectly with the objectives of World Cleanup Day: the joint action of local companies strengthens corporate social responsibility, raises the population’s environmental awareness, and sets an example of how real change can be achieved at a community level, they write.

It was added that in the meantime, the global movement is also taking new directions: the 2025 World Cleanup Day does no longer focus only on litter picking but also places increasing emphasis on raising awareness and presenting the problem of textile waste.
