The University of Debrecen would renew its main building park

For this, however, the university is asking the municipality to transfer the area into its asset management.

If the city council approves the proposal submitted by Mayor László Papp, Debrecen’s municipality will hand over, for an indefinite period, the property in front of the main building that houses the park to the University of Debrecen. The university leadership initiated this, noting that the main building of the university and the park were treated as a unified whole even during their construction, so joint management would provide a more suitable solution.

The University of Debrecen intends to renew the park in front of its main building, planning modernization and renovation with regular maintenance befitting the beauty of the site. The developments will be carried out at its own expense, in stages until April 30, 2029, while ensuring the park remains partially usable throughout.

The university also undertakes to preserve the condition of the statues on the property, operate and maintain the fountain, keep the paved surfaces in order and restore them if necessary, and maintain the park overall.

During the period of asset management, the park would remain open and accessible to everyone, with the university responsible for security and other obligations.

The city council will decide on the proposal on Thursday.
