Children in Debrecen Delighted by Three Tons of Sweets

In 2025 as well, the holidays of several thousand children living in state care or with foster families were made brighter thanks to the chocolate‑collection campaign of the Association for Children in State Care in Bihar.

Around three tons of sweets were collected through the cooperation of various organizations, companies, and institutions. The initiative concluded with a gala on December 18, 2025, where the children were also treated to a concert by Krisztián Burai. The performer said that occasions like this are especially important to him, as they allow him to meet the children in person and give them something—not only during the holidays, but on any day of the year. “I have never said no to an event like this. It’s not about trying to make up for my sins; it simply comes from my heart,” Krisztián Burai said.

The Association for Children in State Care in Bihar has been organizing chocolate‑collection campaigns for years. This year, about three tons of sweets were gathered, from which—through the involvement of the Debrecen Family and Child Welfare Center—more than three thousand Santa packages were assembled. The campaign ended with a gala show where four hundred children received their gifts in person, while the remaining packages will be delivered to residential homes. “We were also able to send packages to the Partium region, as well as to families in deep poverty for whom putting together a Santa package would be a heavy burden,” Lajos Buzás, president of the association, said.

The initiative is realized each year through broad cooperation. The organizers aim not only to give gifts to children in state care, but also to provide experiences and personal attention.

Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasized that the gala brings together the county’s children in state care and their caregivers year after year, offering an opportunity to slow down and connect personally. “This is very important because, due to family tragedies, these children lack the kind of attachment that would allow them to grow up in a warm, loving family. At times like this, someone has to make up for that, and together with civil organizations, the municipality, and school staff, we give them the love that everyone needs,” she stressed.

In addition to the gift‑giving and the concert, the event also featured a musical and dance performance for children.
