Renovations on Létai Road and Lahner Street Could Start This Year
Heavy traffic makes it hard to take a turn from Lahner Street onto Diószegi Road.
Traffic flow will be improved by a roundabout planned for this location. The plans for the modernization of Lahner and Bihari Streets, as well as Létai Road, were completed last autumn, and the permit procedure is currently underway. Hopefully, both this process and the public procurement procedure will be completed this year, allowing construction to begin as well, as stated at the briefing of the Fidesz–KDNP group for the city council.
“On Létai Road and Lahner Street, pavement widening and reinforcement will be carried out. On Létai Road, bicycle lanes will be created on both sides. A stormwater drainage system will also be built, and three roundabouts will be constructed,” said City Councilor István Kovács.
The largest transport development planned for Debrecen’s eastern district is the construction of an inner transport corridor.
The multi-phase road development, with a total length of 11.5 kilometers, would create a direct connection between Main Road 4 and Main Road 47, relieving traffic on the eastern access roads to the city. The first phase, approximately three kilometers long, will be built from Benedek Mihály Street to Vámospércsi Road. Preparing this phase is one of the priority tasks of 2026, said group leader Viktor Papp.
“Certain urban planning decisions on establishing a new route alignment are necessary and will be discussed by the city council next week. This alignment will, of course, be very similar to the existing one but it must be fixed in line with the final design documentation. The detailed construction plans are expected to be completed by the end of this year,” he said.
Construction of the eastern inner transport corridor is expected to start next year. Group leader Viktor Papp stressed that the planned transport developments will determine the quality of life of residents in the eastern part of the city in the medium and long term. This area is also a key part of Debrecen because the city can still expand in this direction. For this reason, alongside the construction of the eastern inner transport corridor, water utility development will also be implemented in the area.
