Railway Traffic Resumes Between Debrecen and Balmazújváros
From 1 March, trains are once again running along the full line between Debrecen and Füzesabony, thanks to the comprehensive modernisation of the Debrecen–Balmazújváros section.
As a result of the investment, journey time between Debrecen and Balmazújváros has been reduced to just 23 minutes, while during the morning peak period services depart every half hour, raising suburban transport to a new level.
Mayor László Papp noted that a development of major significance for Debrecen’s suburban transport network—several years in the making—has now reached completion. He underlined that the upgraded railway infrastructure strengthens not only suburban connections but also serves multiple functions within the city. He explained that the new overhead line system has been installed and is expected to be energised in the spring, paving the way for environmentally friendly electric locomotives to operate between Debrecen and Balmazújváros.
He pointed out that reducing travel time to under half an hour will greatly support employees commuting to the North-West Economic Zone, the largest workplace hub in Eastern Hungary, while also helping to ease congestion on Main Road 33. He added that the project will significantly enhance both suburban and inner-city mobility through the creation of new stops.
József Pántya, Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry of Construction and Transport, explained that the handover marks the fourth major element of the development programme. He noted that the more than 14‑kilometre section of track between Macs and Balmazújváros has been completely renewed. He emphasised that passenger services will resume according to the timetable from 1 March, initially with diesel traction, while the final commissioning of the overhead line system is planned for the end of May. He highlighted that, alongside the new stops at Western Industrial Park and Derék Street, the modernisation of the Nagyhát stop is also part of the investment, and Balmazújváros station will gain new functions. He pointed to the installation of noise barriers and improvements aimed at transport safety, underscoring the importance of more comfortable and predictable travel.
Attila Hadnagy, Regional Track Infrastructure Director at MÁV Zrt., emphasised that the timetable has been designed around passenger needs, with hourly services ensuring reliable access to both Balmazújváros and the North-West Economic Zone. He noted that the line is now capable of handling a 22.5‑tonne axle load, allowing freight traffic in the region to be served to a higher standard—an improvement in which electric traction will play a key role. He added that the renovation of the station building in Balmazújváros is already under way, meaning passengers will soon benefit from a modernised, more comfortable environment.
Zsolt Papp, candidate for Parliament, said that public transport in Balmazújváros has reached an important turning point. He highlighted that the renewed track, new platforms and expanded stopping points now make it possible to reach Debrecen safely, sustainably and in a significantly shorter time. He noted that the refurbishment of the station building and platforms has long been awaited, and that these improvements hold particular importance for both daily commuters and local travellers.
