Schaeffler Debrecen Reaches Historic Milestone
Schaeffler’s bearing and components factory in Debrecen has reached an extraordinary milestone. A total of 400 million bearings have been produced during the more than quarter-century history of the motion technology company’s plant in Debrecen. The company’s statement notes that this achievement is excellent proof of the dedication of the employees working in Debrecen.
The history of bearing production at Schaeffler in Debrecen dates back to 1999. The first production lines manufactured traditional products, including water pump bearings as well as cylindrical roller and tapered roller bearings. The first type of next-generation bearings has been produced at the Határ Road site since June 2013, and as quality requirements steadily increased, the products manufactured there also represented increasingly advanced technology. Production of ball bearings used in electric-drive vehicles, which require the highest level of product quality, began in 2020, and by early 2022 tapered roller bearings for such passenger cars were also being produced in Debrecen.
“Since the beginning, we have worked to deliver the highest-quality products to our customers. This result shows the satisfaction of our partners, and we can all be proud of it. We owe thanks to all our current colleagues, but we must not forget those who have contributed over the past decades so that we can celebrate this anniversary today. We are excited to see what the future holds for us,” summarised the significance of the milestone Péter Szabó, Director of Schaeffler Debrecen Campus.
Excellence for more than 25 years
The tapered roller bearings produced in Debrecen demonstrate well how wide the application range of this product line is, whether they are used in dual-clutch or manual gearboxes, in passenger cars or in heavy goods vehicles. Moreover, the first Schaeffler plant in Debrecen also supplies wheel bearing solutions for the trams operating in the city, while the bearings required for the differential units of premium-category models from a long-established European car manufacturer also roll off the production line here. The strength of the portfolio is shown by the fact that in 2010 Schaeffler designated the Debrecen plant as the European centre for tapered roller bearing production.
The ball bearing type produced at the Határ Road site is used in the models of European car manufacturers, in vehicles powered by conventional internal combustion engines as well as hybrid and fully electric vehicles. The importance of ball bearing production in Debrecen has been steadily increasing, partly as a result of capacity-expansion investments implemented over the past two years. Since 2024 the plant has operated as the European centre of Schaeffler’s ball bearing production, and by 2026 the product will account for more than 40 per cent of total output.
The 400 million milestone has become reality thanks to the dedication of the employees in Debrecen. Around 600 people currently work in tapered roller bearing production, while just under 200 are engaged in ball bearing manufacturing every day, including those colleagues who contributed to the overall factory results through internal component production. Schaeffler’s first Debrecen site continues to strive to maintain its leading role in bearing and component manufacturing while actively shaping the future of motion technology.
