Debrecen Once Again a City of Festivals in 2026

In 2026, Debrecen will once again become a vibrant cultural and culinary hub; from spring right through to the end of summer, the city’s defining festivals and major events follow one another, welcoming visitors with diverse programmes, international performers and unique experiences.

This year, Debrecen’s iconic events are once again built on community experience, the preservation of traditions and continuous renewal. Details were presented at a Tuesday press conference by Mayor László Papp and Zita Dobos, Managing Director of Főnix Rendezvényszervező Nonprofit Kft.

Debrecen City Days

The season begins with Debrecen City Days between 7 and 11 April, with the main venues at Kossuth Square and Dósa Nádor Square. Marking the anniversary of Debrecen as a free royal city, this five-day series of events is built on respect for tradition, community experiences, and the cultural diversity of the city, while offering something for all age groups.

One of the key messages of Debrecen City Days is that the values of the past and the communities of the present together shape the city’s identity. This is reflected in folk art presentations, performances by local artistic groups and festive events.

The programme series begins on 7 April with a ceremonial opening in Kossuth Square, where, alongside a short introduction recalling the city’s history, the festive week will be launched with the participation of students from Ady Endre Secondary Grammar School.

On the opening day and in the days that follow, folk traditions will take centre stage: instrument demonstrations, folk singers, craftspeople and dance ensembles will bring the values of Hungarian culture closer to visitors.

Throughout the week, Debrecen’s leading artistic ensembles and popular performers will take to the stage. The programme includes performances by the Forgórózsa Dance Ensemble, Hajdú Dance Ensemble, Debrecen Folk Ensemble and Főnix Dance Ensemble, often accompanied by traditional dance house events. Lighter, entertaining musical experiences will be provided by live concerts, including performances by the Pipás band, Lóri Heit’s band, as well as Heni Dér and Fruzsi Erdős.

During the event, a continuous craft fair and exhibition will be open to visitors, where the public can explore the works of masters from the Hajdú-Bihar County Folk Art Association and the Bihari Folk Art Association.

Visitors can gain insight into more than a dozen crafts – including bead jewellery making, gingerbread decorating, weaving, basketry, woodcraft and horn carving. Children will be welcomed with a folk playground, craft activities and instrument demonstrations, making the programme an outstanding family experience.

On 10 April, the Old City Hall will open its doors as part of a special programme, offering visitors a glimpse into 17th-century urban life. The “Open City Hall” event will welcome attendees with period-inspired elements and surprises.

The city’s celebration day will be filled with dignified and community-focused events that simultaneously evoke Debrecen’s historical past and strengthen present-day cohesion.

The programme begins at 9 a.m. with a ceremonial flag-raising at the Old City Hall, accompanied by the opening of the exhibition “The Original Founding Charter of Louis the Great”.

On this day, visitors will have a special opportunity to view one of the most important documents in the city’s history, while the Town Hall will welcome guests with open doors.

From 10 a.m., residents are invited to a collective poetry recital paying tribute to Debrecen’s birthday. The programme is also complemented by gastronomic experiences: participants can taste steamed sausage parcels and dill dübbencs with the involvement of DSZC and the Hajdúság Gastro Club. The Debrecen Hajdú Dance Ensemble and the Bürkös band will also be present.

At 11 a.m., the ceremonial assembly begins, marking the highlight of the city’s official celebrations.

Between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., a “Mini Dance Showcase” will take place in Dósa Nádor Square, where the city’s dance ensembles will introduce themselves. The day will conclude at 5 p.m. with a concert by Zoltán Mága, providing a fitting musical finale to Debrecen’s celebration.

Debrecen Spring Festival

The festival season begins on 9 April with the Debrecen Spring Festival. The programme includes music, theatre, dance and fine arts, ensuring that all age groups can find something to enjoy. Performers include renowned artists such as Miklós H. Vecsei, Vera Tóth, Kitti Almási, Erika Náray and Steve Hajdú.

Full programme:

9 April, 19:00 – “Mondjad, Atikám!” – an evening dedicated to Attila József by Miklós H. Vecsei and Gergely Balla
11 April, 14:00–18:00 – “Our Civic Treasures” – free family day at the Kölcsey Centre
13 April, 19:00 – “Spritzer with Kitti Almási – And They Lived Happily Ever After… But How?”
15 April, 19:00 – “Pure Madness!” – improvisational activity show
17 April, 19:00 – “Music Train Super Concert” with the stars of GENERÁL
18 April, 19:00 – Vera Tóth Band – Spring harmonies in Debrecen

Jewish Cultural Days and Street Festival

Debrecen’s cultural diversity and openness are perfectly reflected in the Jewish Cultural Days and Street Festival, organised in cooperation with the Debrecen Jewish Community.

A highlight of the festival is gastronomy: visitors can discover the specialities of kosher cuisine, including the barches burger and the traditional flódni. Cultural programmes also offer guided visits to the synagogue and mikveh, bringing religious and community traditions closer to visitors.

As part of the programme, on 30 May from 9 p.m., a concert by Anima Sound System will take place.

On the closing day, Sunday 31 May, all-day stage programmes await visitors, featuring alternating Jewish musical and theatrical productions with Hungarian and international performers.

Performers include Dixieland, Agyagbanda with a Jewish wedding-themed show, and the Rome-based Progetto DAVKA klezmer ensemble. Theatrical experiences will be provided by the improvisational performance “Flódni”, featuring Péter Novák, Judit Schell and Máté Járai.

The audience can also see the acoustic version of Franciska Törőcsik’s production “On the Road”, while artists from the Csokonai National Theatre will perform excerpts from “Fiddler on the Roof”.

Hortobágy Equestrian Days

As summer approaches, one of the region’s largest heritage events, the Hortobágy Equestrian Days, will be held for the 57th time between 5 and 7 June at the Mátai Stud Farm.

The unique setting of the Hortobágy plains, a UNESCO World Heritage site, provides an authentic backdrop to the experience. This year’s event is particularly timely, as 2026 is the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, meaning the Equestrian Days will place special emphasis on shepherding traditions and the cultural, economic and natural significance of pastures.

The Hortobágy Equestrian Days are a comprehensive celebration of Hungarian equestrian life, where professional and amateur riders, as well as families interested in horses, can all find exciting programmes.

Offerings include the National Csikós Championship, show jumping competitions, rounds of the National Carriage Driving League and spectacular equestrian displays.

Families are welcomed with a Children’s Equestrian Village, craft fair and craft demonstrations, while the highlight of the evening programmes is a spectacular fire-themed horse show. The event uniquely combines tradition with a modern festival experience, offering an authentic insight into the living culture of the Hungarian plains and the contemporary relevance of shepherding traditions.

Debrecen Gourmet Festival

In 2026, the Debrecen Gourmet Festival will be held for the tenth time, this year inviting visitors on a culinary journey under the theme “Flavours of the World” in the Great Forest. The three-day festival, taking place between 12 and 14 June, brings the best of international gastronomy to Debrecen, with Michelin-starred chefs and renowned restaurants, while offering exciting experiences for families and food enthusiasts alike.

The programme includes Borkonyha Restaurant, as well as acclaimed chefs such as Eszter Palágyi, Ákos Sárközi and Roy (Netherlands). The creative container kitchen showcases reinterpretations of flavours, while Sunday’s programmes are specifically aimed at families: a dedicated lunch, children’s concert, book grove with BOOOK Publishing, kids’ corner and “French” market delicacies await visitors. During the event, World Cup matches can also be enjoyed on a large LED screen set up beside the container.

The live music offering is equally exciting: on 12 June Vasovszki Live, on 13 June Petra Gubik, Josh and Betti, and on 14 June Fruzsina Kovácsovics will provide an unforgettable atmosphere.

Debrecen Wine and Jazz Days

Between 6 and 8 August, Debrecen once again becomes the capital of wine and jazz during the Debrecen Wine and Jazz Days, where more than 40 bands perform over three days, featuring both Hungarian and international artists. The festival’s speciality lies in consciously pairing musical experiences with wines, offering visitors a unique harmony of taste and sound.

Featured performers include:

Dr Jazz Duo feat. Péter Oláh
Károly Gáspár Trio
Halper Quintet
Vali Kuna and HungaroSwing
Dezső Oláh Vibratone Quartet
Gábor Szalay – Zsolt Bende Duo
Juli Szigeti Band
Tettamanti Téma
áRON feat. Milán Szakonyi & the Memory Makers
Budapest Bossanova Quartet

The festival is enriched with masterclasses open to university students and young musicians, as well as family-friendly elements, offering meaningful experiences for all age groups. As part of a tradition-building initiative, each year a Hungarian grape variety is highlighted, allowing visitors to discover new experiences through the diversity of wine regions, terroir and microclimates.

Following last year’s olaszrizling, this year the focus will be on kékfrankos, one of the most characteristic red grape varieties of the Carpathian Basin. Although long overshadowed by international trends, winemakers are increasingly recognising its versatility, offering a wide stylistic range from light, fruity wines to complex, characterful varieties.

A unique feature of the event is the pairing of wine and jazz, where organisers present which wines are best matched with each band. During the festival, participants can choose from a curated selection of Hungarian wineries, including special offerings from several unconventional producers.

Debrecen Flower Carnival

The 57th Debrecen Flower Carnival will return in 2026 in a new format, welcoming visitors over an entire week between 18 and 23 August. The highlight is the spectacular parade on 20 August, where compositions made from hundreds of thousands of live flowers move through the city.

This year’s concept focuses on shaping the future and shared responsibility. The organisers aim not only to celebrate Debrecen but also to actively shape its future by involving local communities, educational institutions and generations.

As a highlight musical programme, Ákos will perform in Kossuth Square, alongside artists such as Kowalsky, Bogi Nagy and Sztárban Sztár All Star (Csaba Vastag, Srámek Péter, Évi Sári, Heni Der, Tamás Horváth), hosted by Attila Till.

A key element of the programme is strengthening community participation: residents can join the parade through a collective dance coordinated by “Move Debrecen”.

The visual spectacle is further enhanced by an extended parade route reaching as far as Füredi Road in the evening, complemented by new grandstands in the areas of Őszirózsa and Andaházi Streets. In addition, Dósa Nádor Square will be transformed into a community space where civil organisations, local companies and educational institutions can showcase their creativity.

The Debrecen Flower Carnival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and has become one of the city’s most important international events.

In 1905, Debrecen did not only celebrate – it acted, as women came together to save lives. In 2025, we commemorated, gave thanks and conveyed emotion. In 2026, we will not only celebrate but also shape the city’s future. What truly matters is what we pass on to the next generations.

The Debrecen Flower Carnival thus serves as a tradition-preserving celebration, a community experience and a future-shaping event that connects generations and strengthens Debrecen’s identity.
