Abstract Systems Thinking Underlined by IT Professional Day at University of Debrecen

Students were able to learn about job opportunities offered by the industrial partners of the Faculty of Informatics at the University of Debrecen across three sections at the 33rd IT Professional Day.

According to an article on unideb.hu, at the event university students attended presentations on the connections and trends between information technology and the corporate sector. In addition, they were able to meet the faculty’s corporate and academic partners in person, take part in mock job interviews, and explore employment and internship opportunities.

The event focused on regional career-building opportunities for the faculty’s students, drawing attention to expectations that shape labour market supply and help university students find their ideal jobs more easily.

This time as well, the focus was on artificial intelligence, data science, and robotics.

According to Dean András Hajdu, a major advantage of the Faculty of Informatics is that it represents an approach that adapts to the development of thinking linked to artificial intelligence, as the technology plays a decisive role across numerous fields and disciplines.

During the professional day, students also became familiar with the importance and application possibilities of fundamental AI platforms in cooperation with companies.

“The faculty is shaping its strategy to support young people’s progress as effectively as possible and to provide them with experiences that can be utilised in their professional development and careers. Artificial intelligence plays a central role and has been integrated into the operation of the Faculty of Informatics at a systemic level; we strive to focus on the human-centred application of technology. To this end, we present development opportunities through courses and short-cycle training programmes. The labour market is also responding to AI: certain skills are becoming more valuable, with particular emphasis placed on communication abilities and methodologies. In this spirit, we have prepared three partial training programmes related to the field and have also initiated the launch of new undergraduate courses, the first of their kind in the country. There will be a strong need for systems-level, abstract thinking in the future, and this is what we emphasise to our programming students,” the faculty leader stressed at the opening.

Ferenc Miklóssy, President of the Hajdú-Bihar County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated in his welcome speech that without informational and practical digital technology it is difficult to achieve results in any field, and IT knowledge is gaining value in the corporate sector in order to rationalise processes.” A significant portion of administrative, legal, engineering, and design work is carried out by this technology, but it is not only speed, quality, and accuracy that are driving its rapid expansion in the market. My personal experience is that this knowledge is spreading exponentially, offering innovative solutions that we cannot even anticipate when formulating a problem. At the same time, it is important to possess the appropriate professional knowledge to formulate questions and verify answers. The greatest expectation of an IT professional is to operate systems securely, to be capable of continuous development and the introduction of new systems, and to pay attention to user security. Without IT knowledge, a company cannot remain competitive in the long term,” the Chamber President concluded.

The future will certainly be very different, but fortunately it is already clear what skills large companies across Europe expect from prospective IT employees.

Csilla Stéger, Director at PwC Hungary, said that the majority of job advertisements for IT professionals require, alongside professional knowledge, a demonstrated willingness to learn.” Identifying talent is a global challenge. Experience shows that, according to senior executives at large companies, it is uncertain whether their organisations can keep up with changes in their fields quickly enough. This requires long-term knowledge development and an inclination towards it. A large proportion of job advertisements also include expectations related to personal development, self-management, the ability to cooperate, and administrative skills. Young people should plan their professional careers in this spirit,” she added.

At the 33rd IT Professional Day, students were able to meet 15 corporate partners of the faculty. At the information stands, representatives of participating companies provided first-hand useful information about employment opportunities, expectations, and requirements.

In addition to the briefings, attendees could also listen to 25 professional presentations, including topics such as the relationship between AI and CVs, the path to senior-level thinking, startup scaling, and the role of artificial intelligence in the IT world. Students also had the opportunity to test themselves in mock job interviews at four locations across the faculty.
