Community Bookshelf Inaugurated in Debrecen
A new community bookshelf has been inaugurated on Batthyány Street. What makes it special is that it contains mainly foreign-language books, primarily for children, thereby supporting the area’s multicultural community and language learning.
The aim of the initiative is to provide residents of Batthyány Street and visitors with a sustainable outdoor meeting point based on knowledge sharing. The bookshelf was funded by the German Cultural Forum of Debrecen. The event was celebrated with an informal, family-friendly picnic next to the community raised garden beds.
The bookshelf was largely made from recycled materials with the involvement of teachers and students from the Napraforgó Waldorf School. “I believe that every point, every space, every corner in the city that helps Debrecen residents, as well as visitors or those studying here, to connect with one another and live a community life is always highly relevant and significant,” emphasised Deputy Mayor István Puskás.
