Renovations Progressing on Schedule at Pallagi Road Residential Home
The residential home for the elderly on Pallagi Road is one of the key institutions in elderly care provision in Debrecen, making it especially important that the decades-old building sections are continuously renewed. The muicipality is refurbishing the 1A wing on the first floor using its own resources. Details were explained during an on-site inspection of the renovation works by Mayor László Papp and Deputy Mayor Diána Széles.
Renovation works at the Pallagi Road residential home for the elderly began at the start of the year and are currently approximately 60 per cent complete, progressing according to schedule. The development involves a comprehensive interior refurbishment, including the renewal of floor and wall coverings, replacement of doors and windows, radiators and lighting, as well as the modernisation of the building services and heating system.
During the site visit at the Pallagi Road residential home for the elderly, Mayor László Papp stated that a city’s social care policy is clearly reflected in how it treats institutions that were built several decades ago and now require renovation. He added that developments at the institution have been ongoing since the late 2010s, and that the current investment concerns the 1A wing, which, following refurbishment, will become an important location for dementia care. The Mayor also noted that, alongside social support services, neither central government nor European Union funding is available for this type of institutional renovation, which is why the investment is being financed entirely from Debrecen’s own budgetary resources. This year’s phase of the refurbishment is being completed at a cost of HUF 177 million. The Mayor also highlighted that the Pallagi Road residential home for the elderly is one of the most important pillars of the city’s social care system, with the 325-place institution currently caring for 309 residents. As he explained, the city’s aim is to ensure funding for further renovations in the next budgetary year following the completion of the current works.
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles spoke about the fact that, in an ageing society, it is especially important for social institutions caring for older people to provide appropriate infrastructure and a comfortable environment. She stated that the city’s aim is to create 21st-century conditions for residents. The Deputy Mayor also emphasised the important role played by the residential home for the elderly on Pallagi Road in Debrecen’s social care system, as there is significant demand for elderly care services. For this reason, the city has been continuously developing the institution at 9 Pallagi Road for years. At the same time, renovations can only be carried out wing by wing, floor by floor and building section by building section, as accommodation for residents must continue to be ensured during the works.
According to plans, the renovation works at the Pallagi Road residential home for the elderly are expected to be completed by the end of June.
