Tablets in Support of Studies
The Bihar Association of People Raised in State Care (BAGE) is helping the studies of ten disadvantaged children by providing them with tablets. The young recipients were able to win the devices through an application process.
The call for applications was open to families in Hajdú-Bihar County where at least one parent had lived in state care for a minimum of three years. In addition, children living in children’s homes or with foster parents who had already reached the age of 14 could also apply, as could disadvantaged families where no suitable IT equipment was available for the children, or where the condition of the existing devices made them unsuitable for supporting learning.
Donated by Dávid Katona, an associate of Debex Extreme Sports Park (Debex), which has previously assisted the activities of BAGE for example through collecting donated toys, the tablets were handed over to recipients at an event held at City Hall on 7 May 2026.
As explained by Lajos Buzás, President of BAGE, many children living in state care are talented and perform well academically. For this reason, the organisation decided to support their studies with the donated tablets. A total of 150 applications were submitted for the 10 devices, and all those who earned a tablet submitted excellent application materials. BAGE hopes that, thanks to this support, the future lives of the successful young applicants may become easier and more successful.
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasised how Lajos Buzás has proven as a person raised in state care that difficulties can be overcome and can even lead to helping others, passing on values, and setting an example. This attitude can give strength to everyone, and it is this sense of solidarity and willingness to help characterises its community that make Debrecen a caring and compassionate city. Beyond accepting help, the path out of difficult circumstances is one of diligence, perseverance and learning – as well as remaining good people under all circumstances, whether we are those deserving support or those offering it, because that is what makes a community. It is also important to pass on and preserve this mentality, as it is of outstanding importance both for individuals and for the wider community.
Tamás Vígh, head of Debex, also spoke about the importance of community spirit, noting that if a genuine community had not formed around Debex, they themselves would not be able to help others. This also demonstrates that even a sports facility can represent a community-building force capable of creating values that extend beyond itself. He announced that this summer they would like to invite 60 young people living in state care to Debex Extreme Sports Park so that they can try the sporting opportunities available there.
Before the handover of the tablets, participants were also given a guided tour of City Hall and its history by tour guide Nóra Erdei.
