New InterCity Fleet Could Carry Passengers to and from Debrecen Starting 2029
As a result of the €16.4 billion agreement with the European Union signed on Friday, Hungary will finally be able to purchase completely new multiple-unit trains again after many years. Under the agreement, EU funding will make it possible to procure at least 35 new InterCity trainsets, as announced by Minister for Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy on Facebook.
Regarding the planned trains, he noted that their double-deck design would provide a capacity equivalent to nearly 200 of today’s InterCity passenger coaches, meaning that a procurement of this scale would bring about a nationwide renewal of the InterCity fleet. “According to the plan, these trains will operate on the country’s most important main lines (for example, the Budapest–Debrecen–Nyíregyháza–Miskolc InterCity route, Budapest–Szeged and Budapest–Pécs), and under the current timetable, following the public procurement procedure to be launched this year, the first units could enter service as early as 2029,” he highlighted.
According to the minister, the project could represent a major step forward in the quality of Hungary’s InterCity services, enabling the fleet to be renewed with accessible and air-conditioned rolling stock.
“This is precisely why European Union funding is indispensable, regardless of how the former governing party, now in opposition, attempts to argue otherwise. One thing can already be stated with certainty: by securing the funding required to order the new InterCity trainsets, the new government has done more for the development of Hungary’s railways and public transport in three weeks than János Lázár did throughout his entire term as minister,” he concluded.
