In light of the heat alert taking effect at 12:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026, the Municipality of Debrecen is organizing drinking water distribution in the city center from June 27 through June 30, on weekends and weekdays between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Volunteers from the Debrecen Charity Association will be participating in the water distribution, providing drinking water to passersby at the intersection of Hatvan Street and Kossuth Square (near the Lőrinc Szabó statue).
Prevention is especially important during summer heat waves, which is why Debrecen is not only distributing water but also operating misting machines at several locations to alleviate the sensation of heat. The misting systems are in operation at Kossuth Square, Déri Square, Kálvin Square, Csapó Street, Tócóskert, Angyalföld Square, and the Water Tower Promenade.
To help alleviate the heat, experts are also stepping up efforts to water the city’s green spaces. Public greenery is watered at dawn or late in the evening, and special attention is paid to the operation of automatic irrigation systems. Public drinking fountains and fountains are also operating continuously, helping people stay cool.
The Municipality of Debrecen asks residents to pay special attention to children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with cardiovascular diseases. It is especially important that no one leave home without water, and let’s not forget about pets. Make sure pets have plenty of fresh drinking water on hot days as well. Children, the elderly, or animals should never be left in a parked vehicle, even for a short time, as the interior can heat up extremely quickly to life-threatening levels.
