Modernisation of Vámospércsi Road Junction Could Finish in Time for Start of School Year
The comprehensive reconstruction of the Vámospércsi Road junction is progressing according to schedule and is expected to be completed by September. From next week, the final wearing course will be laid, meaning that a section of Budai Nagy Antal Street will be completely closed until around 7 August, as announced by the Ministry of Transport and Investment.
Motorists using Faraktár Street, Budai Nagy Antal Street and Vámospércsi Road have already been experiencing traffic restrictions for the past year. The comprehensive capacity expansion of the junction began in spring 2025. The HUF 1.4 billion investment is intended to improve transport in this part of the city. “This is one of Debrecen’s busiest junctions, where Vámospércsi Road, Budai Nagy Antal Street and Hétvezér Street meet. Once the reconstruction is complete, the capacity of the junction is expected to increase by as much as 15 to 20 per cent,” said Zsombor Gábor, Head of the City Operations Department.
Water, gas and electricity utilities beneath the road surface have already been replaced as part of the project. A dedicated right-turn lane has been created on every approach to the junction, which required the complete reconstruction of the road structure.
In a statement sent to Médiacentrum Debrecen, the Ministry of Transport and Investment said that the project had been scheduled so that the works requiring the most extensive road closures would be carried out during the least busy period, namely the summer school holidays. According to the schedule, work to lay the final wearing course and apply road markings at the junction will begin on Monday, 20 July. Drivers using the area are advised to note that Budai Nagy Antal Street will be completely closed as far as Ruyter Street while the works are underway. The works are expected to be completed by 7 August, after which the entire junction is scheduled to reopen to traffic around the middle of next month. The technical handover of the capacity expansion project will take place in September.
