Mosquito Control in Debrecen

The Municipality of Debrecen informs residents that ground-based chemical mosquito control will be carried out within our municipal area.

Organized by the National Directorate General for Disaster Management:
Date of treatment: July 20, 2026—Monday—in the hours after sunset (alternate dates: July 21 and July 22). According to the plan, the treatment will be carried out overnight using multiple vehicles throughout the city as follows:
Újkert, Vénkert, Libakert, Sestakert, Józsa, Nyulas, Liget Residential Park, Akadémiakert, Köntöskert, Csigekert, Nagysándor-telep, Fészek Residential Park, Tócóskert, Tócóvölgy, Hatvan Street Garden, Vargakert, Postakert, Széchényikert, Tégláskert, Epreskert, and Kerekestelep; Kassai Road and surrounding area; Júliatelep, Óváros, Csapókert, Meggyes, Szabadságtelep, Biharikert, Homokkert, József Attila-telep, and Lencztelep.

Organized by the Municipality:
Date of service: Monday, July 20, 2026—in the hours after sunset (alternate date: Tuesday, July 21)—in the following areas:
Móricz Zsigmond Road, Benczúr Gyula Street, Dóczy József Street, Nagyerdei körút (and the section of Hadházi Road enclosed by it), Ady Endre Road, Nagyerdei Park, and the area surrounding Nagyerdei Stadium.

For the second year in a row, the municipality has been using exclusively ground-based, locally applied mosquito control technologies, which are more localized and therefore more controllable, and gentler on the local wildlife than aerial spraying.

They regularly inspect mosquito breeding sites with the help of experts. As part of this effort, they are continuously monitoring the number of mosquito larvae in water bodies throughout the city’s residential areas all summer long, which provides the basis for carrying out selective, environmentally friendly biological control measures at the larval stage to prevent mosquito development. Based on these surveys, they carried out preventive biological control measures twice in June, at two locations on each occasion. In addition to monitoring larval counts, they also conduct bite frequency surveys; based on these, they apply chemical control against adult mosquitoes when warranted to prevent public health risks. Based on larval count measurements and bite frequency surveys conducted in recent days, they have commissioned a specialized contractor to carry out the aforementioned control measures.

The coordination of nationwide mosquito control operations is carried out by the Economic Supply Center of the National Directorate General for Disaster Management of the Ministry of the Interior, which has selected the Szerocor Consortium—as the contractor—and the Pannon-Bio-Kalibra Consortium—as the expert—to organize and carry out the operations.

The product used is Deltasect PR 1.2 ULV mosquito control liquid or Deltasect PR 20 ULV mosquito control concentrate, diluted according to specifications. The product, applied in small quantities (0.6–0.8 liters per hectare), kills only the most susceptible insects; it poses no danger to warm-blooded animals or humans, and its active ingredient breaks down within a few hours.

Recommended precautions for the public:

Children’s toys, food, and utensils stored outdoors, as well as clothes drying outdoors, should be gathered up or covered on the day of treatment. It is recommended to keep windows and doors closed during the treatment and for 1 hour afterward, and to turn off any mechanical ventilation systems that bring in outside air. It is recommended to wash vegetables and fruits grown in the treated area before consumption or processing. Do not stay in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle performing the treatment.

Mosquito larvae can develop in as little as one week in rainwater collected in uncovered containers stored outdoors or in various objects. As a supplement to mosquito control treatments, it is recommended that property owners eliminate, regularly empty, or cover small pools of stagnant water around buildings.
