Environmental Monitoring System in Place for Over a Year Across Debrecen
According to experience gathered over the past year, the monitoring stations of Debrecen’s Green Sentinel system, Europe’s only comprehensive environmental monitoring network of its kind, have been operating reliably across the city and immediately detect any changes in environmental conditions. A total of 16 such complex monitoring stations are in operation throughout Debrecen, continuously measuring the most important environmental indicators, including air quality, soil quality, groundwater quality and noise levels at several locations across the city.
In addition, Green Sentinel monitors the quality of surface waters at two locations. The instruments installed at the monitoring stations are regularly calibrated, while the collected data are continuously recorded and samples are gathered for analysis at the laboratories of the University of Debrecen and the Institute for Nuclear Research. Validated data are published online on an ongoing basis together with quarterly reports, enabling residents to monitor the environmental conditions in their own neighbourhoods. “We do not operate as a regulatory authority, meaning that we do not conduct investigations within factory premises or measure emissions. Instead, we monitor immission levels within the city itself for the benefit of Debrecen’s residents and those living in the surrounding area—essentially the environmental impacts that people can actually perceive as a result of everyday social and economic activities,” explained János Géber, Professional Director of KER Debrecen Nonprofit Kft.
The verified data are analysed by more than 80 professors from the University of Debrecen working across four research groups and are also used for scientific studies. The continuous, long-term and comprehensive monitoring programme can provide the basis for necessary interventions and make it possible to track their impact over time. “Whether during the preparation or implementation of an intervention like the development of the Tócó Stream or the Civaqua Programme, this system provides an excellent means of accurately measuring changes in species and assessing the effects of those interventions,” emphasised László Stündl, Deputy Scientific Director of Green Sentinel.
Sándor Kéki, Deputy Professional Director of Green Sentinel and Co-Chair of the Air Quality Working Group, highlighted the deterioration in air quality during the heating season based on one year of data, noting that this can be mitigated through responsible domestic heating practices. Regarding the industrial solvent NMP, the expert stated that its presence has been negligible, amounting to only one-fiftieth of the regulatory limit. “Comparisons with accredited measurements have shown that, in the baseline assessment, NMP could only be detected at extremely low concentrations. The currently permitted concentration is approximately 50 micrograms per cubic metre, while the values we measured were generally below our detection limit of 0.1 micrograms per cubic metre,” he said.
The environmental monitoring system also regularly examines the richness of local wildlife and plant life. Through its continuous and comprehensive measurements, Green Sentinel enables long-term observation and provides a detailed picture of all environmental changes affecting the people of Debrecen.
