Summer Mowing Operations on Public Green Areas

Following the completion of the June mowing schedule, on 24 June the municipality once again suspended further routine mowing operations (excluding work carried out by DEKERT Nonprofit Kft.) in order to avoid unnecessary dust pollution resulting from mowing the affected areas. Given the continuing extreme heat and dry weather conditions, large-scale, systematic mowing of grassed areas remains unjustified. Consequently, throughout August, scheduled mowing will be limited to irrigated lawns, playgrounds, outdoor fitness parks and dog exercise areas until significant rainfall arrives, followed later by mowing on sites associated with the Flower Carnival.

In line with the “No Mow May” initiative, the Municipality of the City of Debrecen suspended the mowing of public grassed areas throughout May, with only irrigated lawns being maintained. Subsequently, during June, contractors engaged by the city for park maintenance completed the scheduled mowing programme across the entire municipality. As a result of the continued lack of rainfall in recent weeks, grass vegetation growth remains negligible, with grass species having dried out and only certain weeds showing signs of growth. Following the completion of the June mowing schedule, on 24 June the municipality again suspended further routine mowing operations (excluding work undertaken by DEKERT Nonprofit Kft.) to avoid unnecessary dust pollution caused by mowing. Following the completion of the June works, vegetation height did not reach the stubble levels requiring intervention during July either.

While mowing operations have been suspended, specialists from the Green Spaces Department and contracted park maintenance professionals have continued to carry out on-site inspections of the condition and growth of grass vegetation throughout the city. Having evaluated the results of this grass monitoring and reviewed current conditions, it has been concluded that, in view of the extreme heat and dry weather, large-scale, systematic mowing remains unnecessary.

Accordingly, during August, and until significant rainfall occurs, scheduled mowing will be carried out only on irrigated grassed areas and within playgrounds, outdoor fitness parks and dog exercise areas. Later, in connection with the Flower Carnival, mowing will also take place in areas affected by the event, taking into account their particularly intensive public use. These measures are intended to mitigate potential health risks, including the prevention of tick-related hazards, and to ensure that key outdoor recreational locations are maintained in an orderly condition.

In addition, mowing deemed necessary for road safety purposes, as well as the cutting of ragweed-infested and heavily overgrown areas to prevent excessive pollen exposure, will continue to be commissioned as required based on on-site inspections.
