Public Lighting Improvements Completed at Several Locations Across Debrecen

The development of Debrecen’s public lighting network continues across the city’s neighbourhoods, with new lighting units recently installed in Józsa and in streets close to the city centre. Deputy Mayor Diána Széles stated that funding for such projects is allocated annually under the Suburban Development Programme.

During the final week of July, public lighting improvements were carried out at several locations in Debrecen, including Sándor Lane. These works form part of the second phase of the modernisation programme. During the first phase, a new public lighting network extending approximately 750 metres was installed along Vállalkozók Road, together with 20 new lighting columns and luminaires. “As part of the Suburban Development Programme, we allocate funding every year for the installation of public lighting fixtures, either in suburban districts or in city centre locations where no public lighting has previously existed. These are primarily newer residential areas where detached housing developments have recently been established,” said Deputy Mayor Diána Széles.

The modernisation of Debrecen’s public lighting system began in 2023. In addition to environmental considerations, the municipality decided to pursue the continuous renewal of the city’s lighting network in response to sharply rising energy prices. At the launch of the programme, the city committed nearly HUF 2 billion to the modernisation works, implemented in several phases. There are approximately 25,000 public lighting units within the administrative boundaries of Debrecen. Given current energy prices, these investments are expected to pay for themselves within a few years. The city’s former conventional public lighting system consumes around eight million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, a figure that is expected to decrease significantly as the modernisation programme progresses.

As part of this year’s second phase of network development, 19 new public lighting brackets and luminaires were installed on Ezerjó Street in Józsa. This was followed by the installation of seven lighting units on Laura Street and Ligetszépe Street, and a further 14 units on Sándor Street, József Street and Kisállomás Street, all mounted on existing poles. Through these investments, the municipality aims to improve road safety throughout the affected areas.

The public lighting development programme will continue at the beginning of next week in Bánk, where a further 16 lighting units are scheduled to be installed.
