Debrecen Joins Nationwide Energy-Saving Measures
Between 2 and 15 August, the decorative illumination of several buildings in Debrecen is temporarily switched off to help reduce the strain on the national electricity grid. In addition, the local authority will suspend the energy-intensive water displays at several public fountains and is asking residents to reduce their electricity consumption during the early evening hours wherever possible.
As a result of the exceptional heatwave affecting the country, electricity consumption has increased significantly. The record-low water level of the River Danube has also created additional challenges for domestic electricity generation. Consequently, energy conservation has become a matter of national importance in order to maintain the security of the electricity supply.
In the spirit of community responsibility, the Municipality of the City of Debrecen is joining these energy-saving measures. As part of the initiative, from 6.00 pm on 2 August 2026 until 15 August, the decorative lighting of several city buildings is temporarily switched off. The measure will affect, among others, the decorative illumination of the Great Reformed Church and the Déri Museum. Public street lighting, however, will continue to operate as normal, ensuring that road safety and the safe use of public spaces are not compromised.
In addition, for energy-saving reasons, the local authority will temporarily suspend the water, light and sound displays at the city’s fountains, with the exception of those in Dósa Nádor Square and Hal köz. This includes the Mist Theatre, the ceramic fountain in Kossuth Square, the fountain in front of No. 16 Piac Street, the fountain in Ady Park, the fountain systems constructed as part of Phases I and II of the Western Inner Ring Road, the fountain in Csapó Street, the fountain in Baltazár Dezső Square, and the fountain in Vezér Street. During this period, the projection programme and laser show at the Mist Theatre will also be suspended due to the absence of the water display. Water will remain in the fountains, and the water treatment and circulation systems will continue to operate to maintain appropriate water quality. Only the higher-energy visual display elements will be suspended.
Through these measures, Debrecen aims to help reduce the pressure on the electricity grid during this critical period, while ensuring that the city’s day-to-day operations and public safety continue without disruption.
The local authority also asks the residents of Debrecen to conserve electricity wherever possible, particularly between 5.00 pm and 10.00 pm, when national electricity demand is at its highest. By postponing the use of high-energy household appliances until later in the day and switching off unnecessary lighting and electrical devices, everyone can help ensure that the electricity supply continues to operate safely despite the exceptional weather conditions.
